WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - - The Cumberland Men's Basketball Team hit the road for their final away game of the regular season and despite massive efforts from
Jalen Anglin and
Demarius Boyd, the Phoenix fell 105-87.
Through the opening ten minutes the lead swapped hands several times, with
Demarius Boyd knocking down a long range effort in the sixth minute of the game to give the Phoenix their first lead since opening bucket. The Cumberlands responded to the Phoenix pressure by hitting two threes in three possessions, running their lead all the way out to seven points, but again CU responded.
Jalen Anglin put in seven points in two minutes times, taking the Phoenix out of the hole and putting them ahead by four points as the half was nearing its close. Despite going ahead, the Patriots used the crowd to their advantage and willed their way back into the lead, hitting a big three pointer and a layup to lead 45-40 at the break.
Straight out of the break Anglin brought the Phoenix into the game, hitting a corner three after a strong rebounding effort. Coupling their efforts together like they did most all night long,
Demarius Boyd put in a deep three of his own and just as the Phoenix were trailing, they found themselves right back in charge.Â
The next several minutes of action were controlled by the Patriots, getting back into the plus column as they hit big threes in key areas. Cumberlands were able to stretch their lead out as high as 14 points, putting the Phoenix on their heels with under five minutes left to play.Â
Entering the game with just under eight minutes left to play,
Nick Brunetti began to piece together one of his best games in a Cumberland uniform, nabbing three steals and scoring eight points in a matter of minutes, cutting the deficit all the way down to just a three possession game.Â
Despite his strong efforts though, the Patriots scored five straight points to widen their lead right back out and it was too much for the Phoenix to manage with the time they had left. As time expired the Cumberlands took advantage of frantic Phoenix offense, using several fast break layups to make the final deficit one of the largest of the night, 105-87.
Cumberland will be back home for one more regular season game this coming week, taking on Lindsey Wilson next Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
