Softball Drops Both Games of their Double Header Against Johnson University

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - - Softball Drops Both Games of Their Double Header in Knoxville

The Phoenix traveled to Knoxville to take on the Royals of Johnson University in a cold doubleheader.

Cumberland started with the bats hot in game one with a lead off single from Anna Lay. The Royals hit the second batter of the game which put the Phoenix in a good position with runners on first and second base with no outs. Abby Chappell singled a batter later which scored Lay to give the Phoenix the 1-0 lead. After a couple of outs, Sara Brogdon hit a double that cleared the bases and gave Cumberland a 3-0 lead. Karley Daughrity approached the plate and the Phoenix hit back to back doubles and another run crossed to plate to end the first inning 4-0.

Johnson answered back after CU's big first inning. They recorded three hits with the Phoenix defense recording an error and scored four runs while leaving two stranded on base. It was three up, three down for both teams until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Royals recorded two singles and put the ball in play for another error by the Phoenix and scored a run to give them the lead 5-4. Another single and a double gave the Royals the lead at 8-4.

Cumberland grabbed a few runs back from the Royals after a lead off single from Hailey Donato. Chappell stayed hot and recorded another single that advanced Donato to third. Daughrity hit a deep fly ball into center field that scored Chappell. The Phoenix scored two runs on three hits and left one base runner on the base pads.

The bottom of the sixth was a good inning for the Royals. A lead off double for Dickerson set up a walk for the next batter. A single followed the walk and an error as well which scored a run for Johnson. Another walk loaded the bases for the Royals and a walk following that scored yet another run for Johnson to leave the score at 10-6 with the Royals leading.

The top of the seventh was three up, three down for the Phoenix offense. Johnson University won game one of the doubleheader 10-6.

Sara Brogdon went one for three at the plate with a double that recorded her two runs batted in. Chappell went two for three and also recorded herself two runs batted in and she also scored two runs herself.

Game two started slow for the Phoenix with a quick top of the first inning. The Royals on the other hand started fairly quick with a lead off double and immediately a single for an RBI. Another double and single back to back put Johnson up 2-0. Another single led to two RBIs for the Royals. Johnson scored four runs in the first inning on five hits and left two runners stranded on base.

Brylee Bartley led the inning off with a single in the second and she was followed up by a walk by Brogdon and in her first plate appearance of the season, Gracie Arnemann hit a double for an RBI. The Phoenix got a run back to make the score 4-1.
In the bottom of the second inning the Phoenix recorded an error on the defense that ended up being a scored run off of another error. After the second the Royals lead 5-1.

Fast forward to the fourth inning, the Phoenix rallied and Brogdon recorded another double as well as Lay. Jacy Hatfield doubled in the inning of doubles and scored both Brogdon and Lay for two runs batted in. The Phoenix pushed to a 5-3 score against Johnson in game two.

Johnson grabbed another run in the bottom of the fourth inning after an error to make the score 6-3 heading to the fifth.

It was three up, three down for the Phoenix offense. But the Royals managed to get back on the base pad after another Phoenix error and turned that error into an RBI single for Johnson. The Royals lead 7-3 going into the sixth inning.

Cumberland recorded a huge inning in the top of the sixth with another Brogdon double. Lay singled after the double to secure a run for CU. Hatfield doubled for her second double of the game and also recorded an RBI. A sacrifice fly by Donato recorded another run by the Phoenix to bring the score to 7-6 and only trailing by one run.

Johnson recorded a couple more base hits and recorded one more run to make the score 8-6. The Phoenix offense went three up, three down and the Phoenix dropped game two of the doubleheader 8-6.
