Phoenix Bats Shine in Game One Win, Late Rally Falls Short in Game Two

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland University picked up a doubleheader split against Brescia, dominating Game one behind Abby Chappell's five-RBI performance in a 7-1 victory before falling 8-6 in a tightly contested second game. The Phoenix offense showed firepower early, but a late rally from Brescia in Game two handed CU the loss.

Chappell drove in five runs, including a two-run homer, as Cumberland cruised to a 7-1 victory over Brescia in game one.

The Phoenix took control in the first inning after Brescia grabbed an early lead. The Bearcats struck first on an RBI double from Zoe Smithson, but Cumberland quickly responded. Chappell delivered a bases-clearing double to put CU ahead 3-1 before Sara Brogdon followed with an RBI double, extending the lead to 4-1 after the first.

Jacey Hatfield added another run in the second with an RBI double, bringing home Anna Lay through two.

The bats were kept at bay until Chappell launched a two-run homer in the sixth, launching a two-run homer to left center to push the lead to 7-1.

Madison Lancaster (1-0) was stellar in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing just one run on five hits. She struck out four and walked two over seven innings.

Cumberland racked up 11 hits, with Lay, Chappell, and Hailey Donato each collecting two. Lay and Ashley Evans combined for three stolen bags in the first game.

In game two, Cumberland held a lead through five innings, but a six-run sixth by Brescia proved too much to overcome as the Phoenix dropped an 8-6 decision in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.

Cumberland again started early as Lay and Evans each singled to start the game. Each picked up a stolen base and Jacey Hatfield brought home Lay with a sacrifice fly in the first inning.
Brescia responded in the third with a two-run double from Lilli Grant, giving the Bearcats a 2-1 lead.

The Phoenix answered back in the fourth, tying the game on a sacrifice fly from Carley Clinard before Evans delivered an RBI single to put CU ahead 3-2. Sara Brogdon added to the lead in the fifth with a run-scoring single, pushing the advantage to 4-2.

However, Brescia's offense erupted in the sixth, plating six runs on a mix of RBI singles, walks, and hit batters to take an 8-4 lead. Cumberland fought back in the seventh, as Brescia gave Cumberland life. Brogdon hit a fly ball to left that the Bearcats misplayed to score two runs, but Brescia got the next out to end the game.

Evans led the Phoenix offense with a 3-for-4 performance, while Lay, France, and Brogdon each added two hits. Clinard (0-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs on nine hits over five innings. Madison Croxford pitched the final two frames, surrendering one run on no hits with two strikeouts. She walked two and hit two batters.

Felicity Cunningham got the win in the circle for Brescia, throwing a complete game giving up 11 hits, striking out four and allowing four earned runs.

Cumberland will be back at home on Tuesday as the Phoenix will host Tennessee Wesleyan in a doubleheader.
