Phoenix Softball Drops Game to Tennessee Wesleyan in Daylight Shortened Doubleheader

LEBANON, Tenn. - - The Cumberland Softball Team welcomed in the Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs for a weekday doubleheader, though it was cut down to just one due to a lack of daylight.

Game one was something of a pitcher's duel with only two runs being scored through the first five innings, both of which were supplied by the Phoenix. Cumberland walked two times to start the bottom of the first inning and some good base running helped to push a runner across to give CU the lead.

Anna Lay and Ashley Evans both walked before stealing second and third respectively, all while being aided by a wild pitch which pushed Lay across, 1-0. After that hot start neither team scored a run for three innings when Cumberland scored another.

With one out in the inning, Hailey Donato slapped a double over the centerfielder's head, sparking some offense for Cumberland. Sarah Brogdon was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second base before Brylee Bartley singled to advance every runner, scoring Donato.

The Bulldogs did spark their own offense in the top of the sixth after going scoreless all game. Breaking the flood walls open, TWU hit four straight singles to load the bases and score one run. With bases loaded and no outs the Bulldogs worked their way back into the game to make the score 2-2, with only the 7th inning of regular innings to play.

Neither team was able to break the deadlock in the 7th with some stellar pitching from Madison Lancaster coming in clutch for the Phoenix. As extra innings rules applied, the game was dragged out to eleven innings before either team found an advantage over the other.

In the eighth inning both teams looked to pull away with the runner on second base giving a head start, but each team responded in the following half of their inning to keep the game alive. It was finally in the 11th inning that the Bulldogs found their own stroke of luck, singling to score their runner and then hitting the only homer of the game to go ahead 7-4.

Cumberland did respond in the bottom of the inning as Karley Daughrity singled to centerfield, scoring Karsyn France and Abby Chappell, though it wasn't enough in the end as the planned doubleheader was cut short due to a lack of sunlight in the three hour marathon game.

The Phoenix will be back in action this Saturday, taking on Georgia Gwinnett for a doubleheader starting at 1 PM.
