No. 9 Grizzlies Shutout Phoenix in Doubleheader

LEBANON, Tenn. - - The Cumberland Softball Team welcomed in the no. 9 ranked Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies for a breezy doubleheader this afternoon, dropping both games.

The Grizzlies jumped on the Phoenix in the first inning, starting a trend of scoring every single inning, while Cumberland couldn't find their way onto the scoreboard. In the first GGC loaded the bases with no outs and Madison Lancaster was able to fight her way out with just one run on the books, though Gwinnett kept their bats hot.

After allowing the run the Phoenix answered by loading the bases themselves; a single from Anna Lay, walk by Ashley Evans, and a hit by pitch from Abby Chappell gave Cumberland a chance to respond but slick pitching from GGC saw them get out of the inning unscathed.

The following inning the Grizzlies put up a four spot on the Phoenix, pulling away to a 5-0 lead which Cumberland kept knocking away at but were unable to find anything. With five innings of work gone and done, the Grizzlies took game one by a score of 8-0.

Game two started off better than the predecessor with Cumberland getting out of the first inning without giving up a run, but still couldn't find a way past the Gwinnett pitching staff. Backing up their pitching with good batting, GGC walked in three RBIs in the inning to go ahead.

That three inning blow up slowed the action all the way down as neither team put up a run until the top of the sixth inning. Putting up the same tally they did in the bottom of the second, the Grizzlies put up three runs before Cumberland could record an out, putting themselves securely in the driver's seat.

With the strong lead and just two more innings to keep it, the Grizzlies did just that, winning the second game of the doubleheader, 7-0.

Cumberland will be back in action this coming Tuesday when they take on Reinhardt University in a weekday DH.
