Phoenix Cold in Dayton as Bryan Takes Both Games

DAYTON, Tenn.--Bryan used a key hit late to win and game one and exploded for 17 hits in game two to get both games of the doubleheader on Friday.

Cumberland softball battled back from an early four-run deficit but fell short in a 6-4 loss to Bryan in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday.

The Phoenix found themselves trailing 4-0 after the second inning as Bryan (8-5) capitalized on a string of hits. Juliana Santillan drove in the first run with an RBI single before Denver Hogrefe added a two-run single. A sacrifice fly from Addison Bunty brought in the fourth run of the inning.

Cumberland responded in the third when Abby Chappell delivered an RBI single to score Anna Lay. In the fourth, Ashley Evans cut the deficit to 4-2 with an RBI single to chip away at the lead.
CU had a chance in the fifth to get things going. Hatfield led off the inning with a single. Two batters later, Karsyn France hit a single and wound up on second base as the throw came to the plate. With runners in scoring position, the Lions forced Hailey Donato to fly out to short left, Cumberland tried to be aggresive and Hatfield was thrown out at the plate trying to score keeping CU down by two.
The Phoenix strung together a rally in the sixth as Karley Daughrity got things going as she reached on an error. Evans drew a walk and Lay hit an infield single to load the bases. Hatfield ripped a two-RBI double to level the game at 4-4.

However, Bryan reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Hogrefe doubled in the go-ahead run, and Cali Green followed with a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 6-4. Cumberland was unable to get anything going in the seventh, giving Bryan the victory.

Hatfield led the Phoenix offense, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Lay also collected two hits and scored twice, while Chappell and Evans each added an RBI.

Madison Croxford (1-3) took the loss in relief, allowing two earned runs on four hits over four innings. Madison Lancaster started the game, giving up four runs—three earned—across two innings.

Hogrefe (4-1) earned the complete-game win for Bryan, allowing 11 hits but limiting Cumberland to just two earned runs while striking out four.

The Phoenix struck first in game two as Daughrity drove in the first run of the game, giving Cumberland a 1-0 lead. However, Bryan responded quickly, tying the game on a sacrifice fly before taking a 2-1 lead on a run-scoring single by Green.

The Lions extended their advantage in the third when Aubree Presley launched a two-run home run. Bryan stretched the lead with an RBI double in the fourth stretched Bryan's lead to 5-1.

Cumberland cut into the deficit in the fifth as Hatfield roped an RBI double to bring home one run, but the Phoenix had a runner thrown out at the plate to end the threat. Bryan then broke the game open in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs, including a two-run double by
Savanna Beard, to push the margin to 8-2. The Lions added two more in the sixth, forcing the game to end via run rule.

Carley Clinard started in the circle for Cumberland and took the loss, throwing 3.2 giving up nine hits and five runs. Annalee Moore tossed 1.1 innings giving up three runs and Madison Lancaster gave up two runs before the game ended.

The Phoenix will be back in action on Tuesday at Tennessee Southern.
