LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.--No. 13 Cumberland men's tennis came up just short in a hard-fought battle against No. 8 SCAD-Savannah, falling 4-3 at the GGC Tennis Facility on Friday afternoon.

The Phoenix (1-3) started strong in doubles play, securing the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Elisey Kalashnikov and Gabriel Godoy defeated Ahmed Abdelaziz and Diego Fernandez 6-4 at No. 2, while Daniel Wessels and Paul-Daniel Meyer clinched a 6-3 victory over Patricio Medrano and Adam Jaupart at No. 3. The No. 1 doubles match featuring Julian Parada and Vitor Ferreira against SCAD's Danil Ozernoy and David Lopez Cruz went unfinished at 5-5 as CU clinched the point.

Despite taking the early lead, Cumberland was unable to maintain momentum in singles action as SCAD-Savannah claimed four of the six matches.

At No. 1 singles, Ozernoy, ranked No. 5 nationally, outlasted Ferreira in a three-set battle, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. Jaupart followed with a straight-sets win over Wessels at No. 2, 6-2, 6-3. Meyer put the Phoenix back on the board with a comeback victory at No. 3, rallying past Fernandez 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

SCAD's Medrano edged out Parada in a tightly contested No. 4 singles match, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, while Abdelaziz overcame Godoy at No. 5 singles in three sets, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, clinching the Bees' victory. Kalashnikov earned the final point for Cumberland, with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Henri Wieber at No. 6.

Cumberland will have a chance to bounce back tomorrow as they play a familiar foe taking on the 18th-ranked University of the Cumberlands in non-conference action.
