Men's Tennis Take Down Patriots at Grizzly Invitational

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - - After making the long trip down for the Grizzly Invitational, the Phoenix drew conference rivals Cumberlands in the weekend of competition and took them down, 5-2.

Doubles play helped to set the tone early, with Julian Parada and Vitor Ferreira running the show at the top doubles spot. Being broken once and allowing the Patriots to hold serve, Cumberland held on to win 6-2, the same yes line that court three fought to.

Playing to a clinch in doubles, Daniel Wessels and Paul-Daniel Meyer allowed the Patriots to hold serve twice and were never broken en route to a point clinching 6-2 victory. Elisey Kalashnikov and Gabriel Godoy were trailing on court two whenever the match was stopped, though the pair led their service game.

Playing against a highly ranked singles opponent for the second day in a row, Vitor Ferreira couldn't find a way past the Patriots number one. Despite battling to make it a 6-3 first set, the second set did the Brazilian no favors, falling 6-1.

The next court to fall would be CU's last of the evening, as Elisey Kalashnikov was unable to get a point for the Phoenix in the number six spot. Coming down to just a couple of service breaks and holds, the Russian fell 6-4, 6-3.

After winning confidently as a pairing, both Daniel Wessels and Paul-Daniel Meyer had to fight through three set matches on courts two and three, though they both came out the victors.

Wessels dropped his first set 6-3, as he struggled to hold his service games, though he responded with confidence by winning his next two sets, 6-3, 6-4. His doubles partner finished less than ten minutes later, taking all three sets to find a way past the Patriots number three.

WInning his first set, it was Meyer who had to deter the Patriots from a comeback victory./ Dropping his second set 6-3, the sophomore had to win the third set and he did just that, sweeping him 6-0.

With the match needing just one win to clinch a victory for Cumberland, both Gabriel Godoy and Julian Parada won on courts four and five. Godoy took his set in a clean 6-3, 6-3, two set sweep, while Parada had more work to do, winning back-to-back sets after dropping the first, winning 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Cumberland will be back in action tomorrow for their last match in the Grizzly Invitational, taking on #14, Our Lady of the Lakes University.
