Women's Tennis Split Doubleheader Against Brenau and SCAD-Savannah

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - - The Cumberland Women's Tennis Team hit the road to take part in the Grizzly Invitational, as well as a short stop to take on Brenau in Gainesville, Georgia.

First taking on the Tigers, Cumberland looked strong in doubles and rode that momentum all through the end for a big 6-1 victory. At the top doubles spot, Asya Tilsim Timur and Kaede Hatano gave up just two sets on their way to a 6-2 victory, while Lara Zugasti and Valentina Mendez dropped one set to win 6-1.

In singles action Elina Sungatullina was the only Phoenix to fall, dropping the #1 singles court in a dramatic three-set match. After dropping the first set in a tiebreak, the Russian stormed back to win the second set, but a third-set tiebreak went the way of the Tigers, 10-8.

Ame Van Eijk faced a similar situation on the second court but she came away the better. The freshman dropped her first set 6-2 and after running away with the second set, 6-3, she controlled the third set tiebreak from end-to-end with a 105 victory.

Emilia Nowak backed her up on court three with a quick 6-2, 6-2 win, sealing the Phoenix's win, as Brenau had already forfeited court six due to a lack of players. With the victory Cumberland secured their first win of the season and still had two more courts to finish play on.

In the fourth singles position Kaede Hatano swept the first set 6-0 and stifled a small comeback in the second set from her opponent, winning 6-2. Playing the final bit of tennis in the first matchup of the day, Lera Grianna did the double, sweeping her opponent in the first and second set, 6-0, 6-0.

The second match of the day was against no.10, SCAD-Savannah, who the Phoenix put real pressure on. In doubles Cumberland got off to a good start, taking the court two as Valentina Mendez and Emilia Nowak took down SCAD 6-4, but the Bees buzzed their way back with victories over Kaede Hatano and Asya Tilsim Timur on the first court, as well as Lara Zugasti and Elina Sungatullina on court three.

With the match being played to a clinch it felt like it would always be an uphill battle for Cumberland, but Lara Zugasti was a shining light at six singles. The Spaniard won her first set in emphatic fashion, winning 6-1, and that carried her into a 6-4 set victory, taking a point for the Phoenix.

Giving the three points that the Bees needed however, Elina Sungatullina couldn't find a way past the SCAD number one, falling 6-1, 6-3. After an excellent match earlier in the day on the second court, Ame Van Eijk couldn't find her form in this one, losing 6-3, 6-1.

The final court to finish was at number five, where Asya Tilsim Timur fell to the same score as Sungatullina, 6-1, 6-3. Other courts that didn't finish were showing strong performances for the Phoenix, as Emilia Nowak had won her second set and was tied 3-3 in the third set. Lastly, Valentina Mendez had lost her first set but was winning 5-4 with a game in hand in the second.

Cumberland will play again tomorrow, taking on familiar faces in their conference foes, University of the Cumberlands. The match is scheduled to start at 4 PM.
