LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland baseball erupted for an eight-run first inning and held off Tennessee Southern in a high-scoring affair, securing a 16-12 victory on Tuesday.

Hunter Moser went 4-for-6 with an RBI and two runs, while Preston Welchel finished 3-for-6 with two RBIs, two runs, and a double. Dylan LaRue added a 3-for-5 performance with an RBI and two runs, while Drew Dalton-Akiwumi reached base four times, finishing 2-for-3 with three RBIs, two runs, and two walks. The Phoenix utilized eight pitchers, with JP Kenyon earning the win in relief. Lincoln Juarez got the start, allowing three runs on three hits in one inning with two strikeouts. Logan Baskin followed with one inning of work, surrendering one run on two hits while striking out one. Jake Green pitched a scoreless third inning aside from one earned run, striking out one. Alec Whitlock allowed four runs, only one earned—on two hits in 1.2 innings, striking out one. Kyle Nyblod surrendered one run on one hit in one inning of work, and Marcelo Saldana closed the game with a scoreless ninth, allowing two hits but keeping the Firehawks off the board.

The Phoenix (11-3-1) fell behind early after the Firehawks plated three runs in the top of the first, but Cumberland responded in a big way, sending 13 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs in the bottom half of the inning. Wilser Then, Trenton Duchscherer, and Aiden McDonald each drove in runs as Cumberland strung together seven hits to take control.

Tennessee Southern continued to chip away, cutting the deficit to 8-5 with runs in the second and third innings. Wilser Then delivered a crucial two-run homer in the fourth, pushing Cumberland's lead to 10-5. However, the Firehawks capitalized on defensive miscues in the fifth, plating five runs—three unearned—to tie the game at 10-10.

Cumberland immediately regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Preston Welchel singled home a run, and Then added an RBI groundout to make it 12-10. Tennessee Southern's Coleman Siniard homered in the sixth, but Drew Dalton-Akiwumi responded with a two-run single in the bottom half to keep Cumberland in front.

Duchscherer delivered the final blow in the seventh, doubling to left to bring in two more runs, extending the lead to 16-11. Tennessee Southern added a solo home run in the eighth, but the Phoenix bullpen closed the door to secure the win.

Cumberland returns to action with a four-game set this weekend as the Phoenix host Michigan Dearborn with doubleheaders on both Saturday and Sunday.
