Cumberland Arms Stifle Wolverines in Back-to-Back Shutouts

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland baseball runs their win-streak to eight games as pitching dominated both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Michigan-Dearborn, securing a pair of shutout victories, 8-0 and 3-0, at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.

Pitching was the story of the day for the Phoenix as CU shutout the Wolverines in both games. The staff used just three pitchers for 14 innings of work, combining to give up  nine hits, no runs, and 26 strikeouts in the pair of games.

In game one, the Phoenix (8-4) wasted no time getting on the board, scoring twice in the first inning. Preston Welchel lifted a sacrifice fly to right to bring home Drew Dalton-Akiwumi before Hunter Moser came home on a balk for a 2-0 lead.

Cumberland extended its lead in the third when Welchel ripped an RBI double to right, scoring Moser.

The Phoenix broke the game open with five-run fourth inning. Rafael Garcia and Aiden McDonald each reached to lead off the inning and Dalton-Akiwumi drove in Garcia with an RBI single. Two batters later, Welchel drove in McDonald on an RBI fielder's choice. Wilser Then roped a single to left to add another run and Toshiki Kuriya capped it off with a two-run double for the 8-0 lead.

The pitching staff did the rest as CU would go on to get the 8-0 victory in the first game.

Cumberland's offense racked up 11 hits in the ball game. Hunter Moser set the tone, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored, while Drew Dalton-Akiwumi also tallied two hits and an RBI. Preston Welchel drove in three runs and Kuriya added two hits and two RBIs.

On the mound, Justin Goldstein (3-1) was electric, tossing five scoreless innings while striking out 10 and allowing just five hits. Grayson Cole shut the door with two perfect frames, adding four strikeouts to secure the shutout.

The second game of the doubleheader was a pitcher's duel between Quinlan Wiley and Dearborn starter Luis Gallardo. Wiley was dominant on the mound, going the distance with a complete-game shutout. He surrendered just three hits, walked two, and struck out 12 in a masterful 94-pitch outing.

Cumberland again struck early as Dylan LaRue launched a two-run homer to right-center in the first inning. He later provided insurance in the sixth with an RBI single to center, bringing home Moser for the only three runs of the game.

The Phoenix were held to just four hits with two being provided by LaRue. He also drove in all three runs in the game.

Cumberland improves to 13-3-1 on the season and will return to action tomorrow to close out the series against Michigan-Dearborn.
