GREENEVILLE, Tenn.--Cumberland Men's Volleyball dropped a hard-fought match against NCAA Division II opponent Tusculum, falling in straight sets on the road Thursday night.

The Pioneers were led by Deklan Wingo, who posted a match-high 22 kills while hitting .459. Tusculum finished with a .309 attack percentage and held an advantage in aces (8-3) and digs picking up eight more than CU.

Cumberland put up a strong fight in each set but struggled to slow down Tusculum's attack, led by Deklan Wingo, who tallied a match-high 22 kills. The Pioneers (7-8) posted a .309 hitting percentage compared to Cumberland's .247 and held a 50-38 advantage in total points.

The Phoenix started strong in the opening frame, hitting .269, but Tusculum's .333 attack percentage proved too much to overcome. Tied at 20-20m the Pioneers picked up back-to-back points to get the momentum before closing  the set out 25-22.

Cumberland posted its best offensive set in the second, swinging at a .348 clip, yet the Pioneers countered with a .480 mark to take a 2-0 lead. The Phoenix lead 11-9, but Tusculum went on a big 6-0 run to take control of the set before closing it out 25-20.

The third set remained close, but Tusculum capitalized on key points late to close out the match. Cumberland again had the lead halfway through up 14-13. The Pioneers manufactured a 4-0 spurt and never gave the lead back up. Cumberland brought it within one down 20-19, but two straight kills by Tusculum pushed them over the edge to get the three set win.

Cumberland will finally be at home tomorrow as CU host Rio Grande in River States action. The Phoenix will also be at home on Saturday as IU East comes to Lebanon.
