Racers win Game One and Game Two Deemed a Tie due to Darkness

LEBANON, Tenn.--Northwestern Ohio wins game one late and the Racers rally in the seventh to send game two to extras. After the Phoenix rallied to tie it in the eighth inning, the game was called due to darkness and deemed a tie.

The Phoenix racked up 10 hits in game one, but had stranded seven runners on base and had a big baserunning blunder late in the ballgame. Dylan Larue, Cohl Proctor, and Aiden McDonald each collected two hits while McDonald added two runs batted in.

Marcelo Saldana suffered the loss in the game, throwing three innings giving up six hits and six runs. Grayson Cole and Kyle Nyblod each threw two scoreless innings.

The Racers started early scoring two in the first inning. Catcher Joskar Feliciano singled home a run and Drake Miller hit an RBI groundout for a 2-0 lead.

The Phoenix chased UNOH starter Brayden Lybarger in the third inning. LaRue started the inning off with a double followed by back-to-back singles from Wilser Then and Preston Welchel to score LaRue. Proctor singled home a run and Trenton Duchsherer doubled in Welchel. McDonald hit a two-RBI single through the right side for a 5-2 lead.

The Racers came right back in the top of the fourth to score four runs. Seth Freeman hit a three-run home run and Devon Tukes hit a double to end Saldana's outing. Tukes would come in to score on a pinch hit single from Tyler Huff for a 6-5 lead.

In the sixth, Cumberland had an opportunity to set themselves up to tie the game. McDonald led off the inning with a single and LaRue laced a single up the middle after a sac bunt from Drew Dalton-Akiwumi. However, McDonald was caught in a run down and thrown out trying to score. Cumberland went three up, three down in the bottom of the seventh to fall 6-5 in game one.

Game two the Phoenix looked to be well in control until nig runs late in the game. Starting pitcher Quinlin Wiley was dominant on the mound throwing four innings only giving up one hit and striking out seven batters.

Cumberland got up 1-0 in the first as Dalton-Akiwumi singled to start the game and scored two batters later from an RBI-single from LaRue.

The Phoenix again had a big third inning as CU pushed across five runs. Proctor hit a two-RBI single to center and two batters later McDonald hit a bases-clearing double for the 6-0 lead.

Northwestern Ohio got some life when shortstop Eliomar Otero belted a three-run home run in the fifth. Cumberland was able to manufacture a run after a couple misplays in the sixth for a 7-3 lead.

The Racers rallied in the seventh to tie the game sending eight batters to the plate scoring four runs. The Phoenix threatened in the bottom half as Welchel and Toshi Kuriya reached on a walk and a hit by pitch to lead off the inning, but UNOH retired the next three batters to send it to extras.

Tukes hit a solo home run in the eighth to give the Racers their first lead in game two. Dalton-Akiwumi led off the bottom half with a walk and LaRue walked two batters later. With two outs and two strikes, Welchel came up big with an RBI-single to tie the game.

After that half inning, both coaches got together and decided to call the game due to darkness ending it in a tie.

UNOH and Cumberland will play two more tomorrow at Woody Hunt Stadium beginning at 11:00 a.m.
