Cumberland Baseball Sweeps Saturday Twinbill to win Series over UNOH

LEBANON, Tenn.--The Phoenix came out on fire in game one to get a 16-2 win and grinded out a 7-3 win for a twinbill Saturday sweep.

Cumberland (5-2-1) swung the bats well today and had solid pitching in both games holding the Racers to just 10 hits all day. 

In game one, seven different Phoenix had multi-hit outings and the Phoenix whacked eight doubles. led by Rafael Garcia's three-hit game. Garcia went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, three runs scored, and four RBIs. Drew Dalton-Akiwumi collected two hits including a double, while driving in three runs.Aiden McDonald contributed with two hits, including a double, while driving in two runs.

Dylan LaRue recorded two doubles while Toshiki went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Cohl Proctor also went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, and two runs scored.

Justin Goldstein earned the win on the mound throwing 4.1 innings giving up two hits and two runs, one earned. Jake Green got the Phoenix out of a big jam, throwing two-thirds of an inning and Will Graves and Alec Whitlock each tossed an inning. 

The Phoenix wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning as Preston Welchel singled up the middle to drive in Dylan LaRue. Toshiki Kuriya followed with a two-run double, and Rafael Garcia added an RBI single, giving Cumberland an early 4-0 lead.

After Northwestern Ohio scratched across an unearned run in the second, Cumberland responded in the bottom half when LaRue doubled to right center, scoring Aiden McDonald to make it 5-1.

A defensive miscue allowed Northwestern Ohio to score again in the third, but Cumberland kept rolling. Garcia continued his big day with an RBI single, and Drew Dalton-Akiwumi drove in two more with a base hit to center, extending the lead to 8-2.

Cumberland kept the pressure on in the fourth as Garcia laced a two-run double to center before Dalton-Akiwumi added another RBI double, pushing the advantage to 11-2.

The Phoenix put the game out of reach in the sixth inning, exploding for five more runs. Cohl Proctor roped a two-run double, McDonald followed with a two-run double of his own, and LaRue capped the scoring with an RBI groundout, sealing the 16-2 victory.

In game two, Preston Welchel played a key role in Cumberland's 7-5 victory, going 2-for-2 with a home run and a double, driving in three runs, and scoring twice. Wilser Then also had a strong performance at the plate, finishing 2-for-2 with a home run as well scoring two runs.Garcia continued his solid day, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Javier Beal had a key two-RBI single. 

Carter Rost got a no decision throwing 3.1 innings pitched giving up four hits and two runs. Lincoln Juarez earned the win in relief tossing 3.1 innings giving up just three hits and one run. Kyle Nyblod picked up the final out of the game to seal the win. 

After the Racers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a sacrifice fly, Preston Welchel responded in a big way, launching a solo home run to right-center to tie the game. Wilser Then followed up with a blast of his own, sending a solo shot over the center field wall to give Cumberland a 2-1 lead.

The Phoenix broke the game open in the third inning. Welchel ripped a two-run double to center, scoring McDonald and Dalton-Akiwumi to extend the lead to 4-1. Garcia later added an RBI double, scoring Welchel, before Beal capped the rally with a two-run single to push the advantage to 7-1.

Northwestern Ohio managed to scratch across a pair of runs in the fourth and seventh innings, but the Cumberland pitching staff held firm to get the win. 

The Phoenix will hit the road on Tuesday for the first action away from Woody Hunt Stadium. CU will take on Tennessee Southern in Pulaski and will return to Lebanon for a weekend series against Indiana Tech.
