Women's Tennis Drop Ranked Matchup to Sewanee at Season Opener

SEWANEE, Tenn. - - The Cumberland Women's Tennis team headed to face off against Sewanee to open up their 2025 season.

Opening up doubles action, several new pairings were tested with the most fruitful being the pair of Valentina Mendez and freshman Emilia Nowak. The two teamed up to take on the no. 2 team from Sewanee and took down the Tigers at that spot for what was Cumberlands only match win on the evening.

Elsewhere, Asya Tilsin and Kaede Hatano paired up at the no. 1 spot and were taken down 6-1. Lara Zugasti and Madeleine Darud held down court three and added another game to their tally but still fell in the end, 6-2.

Elina Sungatullina played the top spot for the Phoenix once singles action kicked off and the senior went to work in her first set. Fighting all the way to a first set tiebreaker, Sungatullina only narrowly fell by a tally of 7-4. Grabbing hold of momentum from that tiebreak win, the Tigers no. 1 took the first set in strong fashion, winning the match 7-6 (7-4), 6-0.

Playing behind her was Aysa Tilsim who fought neck and neck with the Tigers no. 2 player, but struggled to hold her serve when she needed to, falling 6-4, 6-3. The next two spots both played in tiebreaks of their own, showing the Phoenix's ability to face off against a tough opponent already this season.

First was Emilia Nowak who only narrowly lost her first set, dropping the tiebreak by a heartbreaking score of 7-6 (8-6), and kept pressure on her opponent but couldn't find a way past her. Her second set came down to a single service game, seeing Nowak fall 6-4, winning the Tigers the match.

Just past her, freshman Ame Van Eijk played what was probably the most closely contested match of the night. Van Eijk dropped her first set 7-5, and played the second set nearly the same. With neither playing able to get a double break off one another it set up the no. 4 spot for a second set tiebreak, and the Tigers again took it, this time 7-6 (7-4).

Lara Zugasti struggled to find a groove one more spot down, winning just a lone game in her 6-1, 6-0 loss to Sewanee. Lastly, Madeleine Darud brought up the no. 6 spot for singles action and despite a strong showing in her first set, the sophomore was the final Phoenix to fall, losing 6-3, 6-1.

The Phoenix won't play again until February 20th; heading to Lawrenceville, Georgia for the annual Grizzly Invitational hosted by Georgia Gwinnett.
