Women's Basketball Take Tigers to the Wire in Loss

LEBANON, Tenn. - - The Cumberland Women's Basketball team welcomed the no. 3 ranked Campbellsville Tigers to the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena and took them to the wire.

The Tigers got hot early, running out a quick eight point lead before the Phoenix ever saw a shot hit the bottom of the net. Faith Colston was able to hit a three to finally stop the bleeding and Cumberland was able to rally to keep it a single digit game. Colston and Jordan Harris combined to score all of the Phoenix's points in the quarter, setting up CU for a strong performance in the second quarter.

Colston and Harris continued to share the scoring responsibilities in the second quarter, scoring the first six points between the two of them, before a huge Maddie Brillhart three pointer. Directly after hitting that big shot, the sophomore grabbed a steal and went coast-to-coast before being fouled and converting both free throws.

Cumberland kept up that scoring pace while also playing good defense, putting themselves back into the game, also outscoring the Tigers in the quarter. Ending things on a great note it was Mariyah Person and Emaleigh Tarpley hitting five free throws to go into the break with just a two point deficit over the Tigers.

Campbellsville came out in the third quarter and put themselves back into the driver's seat, stretching their lead out to nine points, never able to put it in double digits though. Each team traded shots back and forth to set up the final quarter with a five point gap between them, 50-45.

Starting off the fourth quarter with a bang, Faith Colston got the ball in the right corner and with the help of a shooter's roll, hit a three to make it a two point game, 50-48. The Tigers put their feet right back on the gas, scoring a three pointer of their own and a layup to make it a seven point gap yet again.

The Phoenix put shots in again and again to bring it all the way down to a two point game on several occasions, but the Tigers hit shots when they needed to. Tarpley hit a layup in the embers of the game but Campbellsville was able to stretch their lead out to nine points, thanks to six free throws in the last minute of the game.

Cumberland will be back in action on Monday, February 10th, taking on the Georgetown Tigers for the second time in four games.
