CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.--Cumberland men's tennis nearly pulled off an upset against NCAA Division I Austin Peay, falling just short in a 4-3 battle on Tuesday afternoon at the Governors Tennis Courts.

The Phoenix started strong in doubles, securing the first point of the match with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Gabriel Godoy and Vitor Ferreira dominated at the No. 2 spot with a 6-2 win, while Julian Parada and Paul-Daniel Meyer matched that score at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point.

In singles, Cumberland extended its lead with wins from Godoy and Hassan Ammar. Godoy delivered a big performance at No. 3, battling through a tiebreaker to claim a 7-6, 10-6 victory. Ammar controlled his match at No. 4, dispatching Aeneas Schaub 6-2, 6-4.

However, the Governors (4-4) responded by taking the remaining four singles matches. Ferreira put up a fight at No. 1, pushing Sota Minami to the brink but ultimately falling 7-6, 7-4, 6-3.
Meyer and Arne Sohmer also battled but came up short in straight sets. Elisey Kalashnikov fought hard at No. 6 but was unable to overcome Javier Tortajada in a 6-3, 6-4 defeat.

The Phoenix will kick off conference play tomorrow at Campbellsville. Cumberland will take the court after the women's match concludes.
