Phoenix Fall in Straight Sets to No. 8 Georgetown

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland men's volleyball struggled to find offensive momentum against 8th-ranked Georgetown, falling in straight sets Tuesday night at Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena.

The Phoenix (10-5, 4-3 RSC) put up a competitive first set, but Georgetown (12-3, 7-0 RSC) took control with a dominant second set, holding Cumberland to just three kills while hitting .370 themselves. The Tigers sealed the win in the third getting the 3-0 sweep.

Chance Gallardo led Cumberland with seven kills and six digs, while Jacob Whyte and Joao Infante added six kills each. Sam Mannebach paced the offense with 17 assists, and Kaden Kuehler led the defensive effort at the net with four blocks.

Georgetown was led by Adam Szewinski with 10 kills, while Jose Acuna Yepes and Kristjan Unt each tallied nine. Finn Heinemann recorded 33 assists and three service aces, while Miguel Ariza Vega anchored the Tigers' defense with seven blocks.

Georgetown took the opening set 25-21, but Cumberland kept it competitive early, hitting .214 with 12 kills. The Phoenix stayed within striking distance behind strong play from Chance Gallardo and Jacob Whyte, but the Tigers' efficiency at the net, led by Adam Szewinski and Jose Acuna Yepes, helped them close out the set.

The Tigers dominated the second set, cruising to a 25-11 victory while holding Cumberland to a negative hitting percentage (-.158). Georgetown's defense and blocking presence stifled the Phoenix attack, while their offense remained steady, hitting .370 with 12 kills to take a commanding 2-0 lead.

Georgetown sealed the sweep with a 25-13 win in the third, delivering their most efficient performance of the match by hitting .500 with 12 kills. Despite efforts from Gallardo and Joao Infante, Cumberland struggled to overcome the Tigers' size at the net, as Miguel Ariza Vega and Robin Puss combined for multiple blocks to close out the match.

Cumberland will be in action the rest of the week at home as CU hosts the Phoenix Classic on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Cumberland will take on Campbellsville and No. 3 Lawrence Tech on Thursday.
