CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky.--Cumberland women's tennis team started off conference play with a big 5-2 victory over Campbellsville on the road Wednesday afternoon.

The Phoenix started strong taking two of three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Emilia Nowak and Juanita Mendez earned a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles, while Valentina Mendez and Maria Arbelaez secured a 6-2 victory at No. 3.

In singles play, Cumberland dominated the middle of the lineup, taking four of the six matches. Nowak cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3, while Valentina Mendez battled through a three-set victory at No. 4 (7-5, 2-6, 6-0).

Arbelaez also fought back after dropping the first set to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5. Lara Zugasti closed out the match with a straight-set win at No. 6 (6-0, 7-5).

Cumberland will have over a week off as the Phoenix will take on Tennessee Southern on March 20 in Pulaski.
