LEBANON, Tenn. - - The Cumberland Women's Tennis team took down the Oakland City Mighty Oaks in a non-conference dual this afternoon.

Cumberland started off hot with a victory in doubles, grabbing wins on courts two and three. Juanita Mendez and Emilia Nowak took down the Mighty Oaks at the two spot, winning 6-3 after going down 3-1.

Lara Zugasti and Kaede Hatano made quick work of their opponents on the third court, winning 6-0. Madeleine Darud and Asya Tilsim Timur were the only pair to fall, dropping their match 5-7 at the top spot.

With a 1-0 match lead, Cumberland quickly added to their total as Elina Sungatullina won her match in the first set and her opponent retired. Lara Zugasti also won at the six spot, taking down the Mighty Oak 6-2, 6-3, while she never trailed once throughout the match.

Securing the point for CU, Madeleine Darud dropped her first set 4-6, but stormed back and won her next two sets 6-4, 6-0. Winning the doubles point and three singles point the Phoenix were able to win the match at the four-point clinch mark, meaning Emilia Nowak, Ame Van Eijk, and Valentina Mendez all had their matches cut short in the third set.

Nowak was in the driver's seat, nearing a three set victory as she led 3-0 in the third, having lost the first 4-6 and won the second 6-2. Van Eijk had a tighter match, going 4-6, 6-2, 3-2 when her final set was stopped.

Finally, Valentina Mendez and her opponent were mirrors of one another, as she dropped her first set 2-6, won her second 6-2, and was tied at 2-2 in the third.

Cumberland will be back on the court next Tuesday, facing off against Coastal Alabama Community College.
