Women's Tennis Rout Coastal Alabama on Senior Day

LEBANON, Tenn. - - The Cumberland Women's Tennis team came one point shy of a Senior Day sweep as they took down Coastal Alabama CC 6-1 this afternoon.

Cumberland's dominant afternoon began with a resounding victory in doubles play, dropping just one game total on all three courts. Elina Sungatullina and Asya Tilsim Timur allowed one service hold on court one, winning 6-1, while each pair of Lara Zugasti and Kaede Hatano as well Juanita Mendez and Emilia Nowak won 6-0.

Number one singles was the only court to fall, as Elina Sungatullina dropped a three set match against a top thirty ranked opponent in JUCO. The Russian won her first set 6-3 but her counterpart flipped the switch, taking the next two sets 2-6, 4-6.

Ame Van Eijk was the only other Phoenix to go three sets, dropping her first set but storming back to win in a full third. Playing on the second court for much of this season, Van Eijk had a strong opponent at that spot but found her rhythm today, winning the second 6-4 before then sweeping the third set 6-0.

Each of the next four courts won their matches in straight sets, nuzzling the Coyotes hopes for a comeback. Valentina Mendez and Kaede Hatano won in similar fashion on courts three and four, 6-3, 6-3 for both of the Phoenix players.

Madeleine Darud backed up her win last week with a resounding win on court five, taking down her opponent in just over thirty minutes to the tune of a 6-0, 6-0 thumping. Finally, Lara Zugasti wrapped up play for Cumberland as the Spaniard took home a Senior Day win, 6-1, 6-2.

Cumberland will be back in action tomorrow as the Phoenix head to Georgetown, Kentucky to take on conference rivals Georgetown.
