Timur's Victory Send Cumberland in NAIA National Championship Second Round

MOBILE, Ala. - - The Cumberland women's tennis team upset the No.15-seed Morningside Mustangs this afternoon, marking their first win in the NAIA National Tournament since the 2008 season.

The No.18-seed Phoenix jumped out early to win the doubles point and they never looked back. Valentina Mendez and Juanita Mendez dominated at No. 2 doubles, rolling to a 6-0 victory over Lara Heinrich and Helene Kreibich. Elina Sungatullina and Maria Arbelaez followed with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles to clinch the point for the Phoenix before the top doubles match with Asya Tilsim Timur and Madeleine Darud was completed.

In singles play, Valentina Mendez fell to Line Jensen 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, but Maria Arbelaez put the Phoenix back in front with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Brooke Marshall at No. 3 singles. Elina Sungatullina was defeated by Helene Kreibich 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles, and Juanita Mendez dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Kailee Bailey at No. 5 singles, giving the Mustangs a short-lived 3-2 lead

Ame Van Eijk responded with a strong decision on court six, 7-6, 6-1, to put all the pressure on the pairing on court two.

With the season hanging in the balance, Timur delivered the deciding point. After losing the opening set 6-3, Timur rallied to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-4 over Lara Heinrich, clinching Cumberland's 4-3 victory and sending the Phoenix into the next round of the National Championship.

Now the Phoenix will stare down conference rivals and overall No.2-seed Lindsey Wilson tomorrow afternoon, hoping to upend a Blue Raider team that has been excellent all season long, having never dropped out of the top three of the NAIA rankings.
