Softball Ends the Series with Two Wins Against Bethel University

LEBANON, Tenn. – Softball Splits Day Two of the Conference Opening Series Against Bethel University.

Cumberland pulled off a 3-1 win over Bethel in a hard-fought defensive matchup. The game remained scoreless through two innings before Bethel broke through in the third. Caruthers led off with a single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a sacrifice fly to give Bethel a 1-0 lead.

Cumberland responded in the fourth when Sara Brogdon worked a walk and later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1. In the fifth, Hailey Donato led off with a single and came home on Karsyn France's clutch RBI hit up the middle, putting the Phoenix ahead 2-1.

The Phoenix added insurance in the sixth. Azaria Jones started with a single, and Addison Melton came in to pinch run. After a sacrifice bunt and a single by Anna Lay, Evans delivered a key RBI hit to bring Melton home, making it 3-1.

The Phoenix ended the second game of the series leaving 10 runners stranded on the base pads. The Phoenix recorded three runs on five hits and played a clean game defensively with zero errors in the field.

Madison Croxford entered the game in the sixth inning with runners on first and second with no outs and got out of the jam without letting a runner advance. She finished the game with the save for the teams first save of the year.

Anna Lay went 1-1 with a single and two walks drawn. She also recorded a stolen base in the win. Ashley Evans went 1-2 with a drawn walk and recorded an RBI as well. Karsyn France came up clutch late in the game to go 1-3 with an RBI single that gave the Phoenix the lead. Despite a strong defensive effort, Cumberland came up just short in a 2-1 loss to Bethel in a tight game.

Cumberland struck first in the bottom of the third inning when Anna Lay worked a walk, stole second, and eventually came around to score on Jacey Hatfield's RBI single to left field, giving the Phoenix a 1-0 lead.

Bethel responded in the fourth with a pair of runs. Carnell led off with a single and was followed by a walk to Carey. Benson then delivered a key RBI single to tie the game, and Caruthers added another run with an infield hit, pushing Bethel ahead 2-1.

The Phoenix had chances to even the score, loading the bases in the fifth and putting runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings, but couldn't capitalize.

The Phoenix left 11 runners stranded including leaving the bases loaded two different times. Jacey Hatfield drove in Cumberland's lone run with a third-inning single and went 1-3 with a walk drawn. Hailey Donato recorded two hits on the day, continuing her solid form at the plate going 1-3 with a sacrifice fly.
Sara Brogdon reached base twice and stole a base to keep the Phoenix offense moving as she went 2-3 with a drawn walk and a stolen base.

Cumberland's pitching staff held Bethel to just two runs despite multiple threats, with Croxford coming in to shut down further damage in the fourth inning.

Despite out-hitting Bethel 5-4 and playing error-free defense, the Phoenix couldn't find the key hit to pull ahead, leaving 11 runners on base throughout the game. Cumberland looks to bounce back in their next contest as they take on Brescia University on March 17th in a doubleheader with game one starting at 2:00 PM in Owensboro, Kentucky.
