Phoenix Blast Six Home Runs in Run Rule Victory over Johnson

LEBANON, Tenn. - - Cumberland Baseball had a big day at the plate, slapping 6 homers and 17 hits in total, run-ruling the Johnson Royals 14-4.

After both teams recorded a hit and stranded a runner on base in the first inning, the Royals broke the game open in the top of the second. Johnson walked to kickoff the inning and a double into the gap put runners on second and third with no outs.

A passed ball advanced the runners and scored one for the Royals, as well as a ground out to the pitcher, putting another one run on the board. Getting out of the jam, Jake Green forced a strikeout and a flyout to end the inning with only two runs of damage.

Cumberland responded doubly, scoring four runs in the bottom of the innings. Toshi Kuriya and Rafael Garcia both singled to start the inning, both being pushed over by an Aiden McDonald's sacrifice bunt. Gaines Haussin slapped a single through the middle infield to score both runners and tied it up at 2-2.

Despite Haussin being caught stealing at second, Cumberland's Drew Dalton-Akiwumi was hit by a pitch the following at-bat and Hunter Moser gave the Phoenix a two run lead with a homer over the right field fence.

Marcelo Saldana came in for relief in the top of the third and got the Phoenix out of the inning without allowing a run, setting up Cumberland for another big offensive inning. Taking lead from Moser, Dylan Larue stepped up to the plate and led off the inning by hitting a solo home run past the batter's eye.

With two outs Aiden McDonald was hit by a pitch, giving Gaines Haussin a chance to drive more runs in and the junior did just that. Haussin slapped a single in his first at-bat but would join the crew with Moser and Larue this time around, launching a shot over the left field wall; 7-2 Phoenix.

A scoreless fourth inning gave way for more offense in the fifth, as both teams added to their totals in the frame. Johnson took four straight hits off of Saldana in the top of the inning, making way for Grayson Cole to come in and get CU out of another jam.

The right-hander from Mt. Juliet walked one to load the bases with one out, but a slick double play between Dalton-Akiwumi and Garcia got Cumberland out of the inning with only two runs worth of damage. Again rallying with two outs, the next inning it was Aiden McDonald getting in on the action with a solo shot of his own, his first of the season.

Grayson Cole and Logan Baskin shut the door on the next two innings and Toshi Kuriya stepped up in the bottom of the seventh inning and opened the floodgates again. Kuriya hit the fifth home run of the game and four hits later, the Phoenix led 13-4.

Logan Baskin didn't allow a run in the eighth and Dylan Larue hit his second homer of the game to run-rule the Royals and walk the game off, 14-4. His shot was the sixth of the game and gave the switch hitter a homer from both sides of the plate.

Cumberland will be back in action this weekend, returning to conference action against Bethel on Friday.
