Four Homers and Quality Start from Wiley Propel Phoenix Past Bethel in Opener

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland Baseball launched four home runs and Quinlan Wiley was tremendous on the mound again as Cumberland won the opener over Bethel 10-6 on Friday at Ernest L. Stockton Field - Woody Hunt Stadium.

Offensively, Cumberland racked up 13 hits and scored 10 runs. Preston Welchel blasted two home runs and drove in three while Hunter Moser and Toshiki Kuriya each hit one.  Drew Dalton-Akiwumi added a 3-for-5 performance scoring a run and driving in a run.

On the mound, Quinlan Wiley (5-0) delivered another strong outing, tossing seven innings while allowing just one run on four hits, striking out eight without issuing a walk. Marcelo Saldana gave up an unearned run in the eighth before Bethel tried to mount a late comeback in the ninth, scoring four runs, including a three-run homer from Jared Hall.

Bethel (13-9, 1-2 MSC) finished with eight hits and six runs. Most of the Wildcats' damage came in the last two innings. Hall finished 1-for-5 with the three-run home run. Ivan Vega and Jose Olmeda each collected two hits.

The Phoenix struck first in the bottom of the first inning as Dalton-Akiwumi lead off the game with a double. He came in to score as Moser delivered an RBI single for the early lead.

Cumberland extended its lead in the third when Preston Welchel crushed a two-run homer to right field, scoring Moser to make it 3-0.

Bethel got on the board in the fourth on an RBI single from Cade Pilkinton, but Cumberland responded with a massive fifth inning. Moser started the scoring surge with a solo home run to center field before Welchel followed with his second homer of the game, a moon shot to right. With two runners aboard, Kuriya joined the power display, launching a three-run blast to left field to break the game open at 8-1 with the third bomb of the inning. The Phoenix tacked on two more runs in the inning, one coming off a Dalton-Akiwumi RBI single and another on a wild pitch, pushing the lead to 10-1.

In the eighth, Saldana issued a walk to the first batter he faced. After the Wildcats loaded the bases on an error and a walk. Zach Groffith came in to score on a groundout to make it an eight run game.

In the ninth, the Wildcats scored four runs against Lincoln Juarez. The first run came in on an RBI sac fly and three more came with the two-out home run from Hall for the 10-6 final score.

The Phoenix will look to clinch the series when they return to action on Saturday against the Wildcats with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
