Phoenix Take Down No. 21 Ranked Firehawks in Pulaski

PULASKI, Tenn. - - Tying their longest win streak of the season, the Cumberland Men's tennis team took down the UT Southern Firehawks in a midweek dual.

Cumberland's hot day started off with securing the doubles point in a match tiebreak at two doubles. The Brazilian duo of Vitor Ferreira and Gabriel Godoy went into the tiebreak at 6-6 as neither team could find a way to break the other's serve, and the pairing won in a razor thin contest, 7-6 (7-5).

Daniel Wessels and Paul-Daniel Meyer won on the third court, securing a 6-4 victory as well as the first point for the Phoenix. Julian Parada and Elisey Kalashnikov fell at one doubles, 6-2.

Singles action kept up at that same pace as Cumberland ran away with the match. Daniel Wessels defended his spot at number one, winning comfortably at 6-2, 6-2, in just over an hour.

Vitor Ferreira had a longer match at two singles but again was able to sweep his opponent, winning 6-3, 6-4. Continuing down the seeding list, Paul-Daniel Meyer won the match for the Phoenix as far as points are concerned, though his match was a marathon three-setter.

The South African came out hot and won his first set 6-4, but dropped his second 2-6, meaning he had to win a full third set. Breaking his opponent early, Meyer ran away with the third set and the victory, 6-3.

Each of the next two matches had to be played to third sets, though each was decided by a match tiebreak rather than a full third set. Gabriel Godoy played the longest match of the afternoon, taking more than two hours as he won his first set 7-5, dropped his second in a tiebreak 7-6 (7-5). Coming down to a ten point tiebreak, Godoy won 12-10.

Next up, Julian Parada finally dropped a three-set match after winning several already this season. Mirroring Meyer's first two sets, Parada won his first 6-2 and dropped his second 6-4, making way for another ten points tiebreaker where he fell 10-6.

Hassan Ammar was the six seed in singles action and swept his opponent at that spot, 6-3, 6-5.

Cumberland will next take on Marian University at home on Sunday, March 23rd at 2:00 PM.
