Men's Volleyball Fall in Four to Polmeroys

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland men's volleyball dropped a four-set battle against St. Mary's-of-the-Woods in the River States Conference Match of the Week on Wednesday evening at Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena.

Cumberland came out and won the first set, but the Polmeroy's bounced back to win the next three sets to win in four over Cumberland.

The Pomeroys held the edge in multiple categories, finishing with 55 kills compared to Cumberland's 51 while also committing fewer attacking errors with 16 to the Phoenix's 22. St. Mary-of-the-Woods recorded a .364 hitting percentage on 107 total attempts, while Cumberland hit .257 on 113 swings. The Pomeroys also outperformed the Phoenix in points, 71.5 to 63.5, and in assists, 52 to 50. Cumberland held a slight edge in service aces, tallying five to SMWC's three, but the Pomeroys controlled the net defensively with 13.5 blocks compared to Cumberland's 7.5.

The Phoenix (14-8, 6-4 RSC) came out strong, dominating the opening set with a .400 hitting percentage to take a 25-16 win. However, the Pomeroys (21-6, 5-5 RSC) responded by claiming the next three sets, 25-22, 25-19, and 25-21, to secure the victory.

Joao Infante led Cumberland's attack with 16 kills, while Jacob Whyte added nine and Kix Ferrell contributed seven. Setter Sam Mannebach dished out 32 assists, and Chance Gallardo posted a team-high seven digs. Cumberland finished the match with 51 kills on a .257 hitting percentage.

St. Mary-of-the-Woods was paced by Christian Green, who registered a match-high 15 kills, followed by Joseph Szadorski with 12. Kristofers Klavins orchestrated the offense with 47 assists, while the Pomeroys' defense was bolstered by Klavins and Yammiel Martinez, who combined for 11 blocks. SMWC posted a .364 hitting percentage and tallied 13 total blocks to limit Cumberland's attack.

The Phoenix will be on the road on Friday as they travel to Rio Grande.
