Women's Tennis Take Two from No. 3 Blue Raiders in Tight Loss

LEBANON, Tenn. - - Cumberland Women's Tennis took the no. 3 ranked Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders to the brink in a midweek conference dual, falling 5-2.

The Blue Raiders came out swinging with a win at one doubles over Madeleine Darud and Valentina Mendez, taking the match 6-3. Cumberland responded with a win on the second court, seeing Emilia Nowak and Juanita Mendez taking down the Blue Raiders 6-4.

Linsdey would ultimately take the doubles point though as they won the third spot, 6-0, over Lara Zugasti and Kaede Hatano.

Elina Sungatullina fell in straight sets to the Blue Raiders number one, falling 6-1, 6-2. Valentina Mendez backed up Sungatullina with a three set thriller at number two, though the Colombian was unable to win it.

Dropping the first set, 7-5, Mendez responded with a 6-4 victory in the second, but was unable to keep that momentum as she fell 6-2 in the third.

On court three things did begin to turn around for the Phoenix as Emilia Nowak took her match in three sets. After falling 6-3 in the first set, Nowak then won 7-6 in a second set tiebreaker and kept her rhythm as she wrapped it up with a 6-4 win in the third.

Ame Van Eijk made it three straight three set matches, though she was unable to come out on the winning side. The freshman dropped her first set 6-3 and responded in the second with a 6-3 win of her own, but the Blue Raider on court four took the final set 6-1.

On court five Madeleine Darud had been riding a hot streak this week but was not able to keep it up as she fell 6-1, 6-2. Lara Zugasti played the latest match of the night as she was on the court till nearly 9 PM, though it paid off as she won in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4.

Cumberland will play yet again tomorrow as they will make up their match against UT Southern that was canceled earlier this season. The match is set to start at 3 PM in Pulaski.
