Phoenix Take Down Georgetown 12-6 in Weekend Opener

GEORGETOWN, Ky.--Cumberland baseball powered past Georgetown with a 12-6 victory Friday night at Robert N. Wilson Field, using a strong start and steady offense to secure the win.

Cumberland (25-8-1, 5-2 MSC) posted 10 hits and took advantage of nine walks and four hit batsmen to score 12 runs in the game. Hunter Moser was on base five times posting three hits and scoring four runs for the Phoenix. He also stole three bases in the game. Wilser Then continued to stay hot adding two hits and three RBIs in the game. Toshiki Kuriya belted a home run and drove in three. 

On the mound, Quinlan Wiley got the start and was cruising until he ran into trouble in the fourth and fifth being chased from the game. Jake Green (4-0) earned the win in relief, throwing 3.2 innings while allowing just one run on two hits with three strikeouts. Wiley tossed 4.1 innings and allowed five earned runs. Kyle Nyblod closed it out with a scoreless ninth inning.

The Phoenix wasted no time getting on the board, plating three runs in the first inning. The Phoenix loaded the bases quickly and Drew Dalton-Akiwumi scored on an early error as the Tigers tried to pick behind at second. Wilser Then followed with an RBI single before Kuriya drove in another run on a fielder's choice. 

Cumberland tacked on three more in the third. Moser led off the inning with a single and stole second before Then drove him in with an RBI single. Dylan LaRue roped a double to left to put runners on second and third. Kuriya walked to load the bases and Garcia hit a sacrifice fly to right to plate Then. Kuriya and LaRue executed the double steal on the corners to steal another run in the inning and extend the lead to 6-0.

Cumberland extended its lead to 8-0 in the fourth on a sac fly from Then and bases loaded walk to Kuriya.  Georgetown responded with four runs in the bottom half, stringing together four singles to start the inning before an RBI single from Jarrett Chapman and a sac fly to cut the lead in half at 8-4 going to the fifth. 

The Tigers continued to chip away, adding a run in the fifth on a single, a sac bunt, and an RBI single from Peyton Rios.

Kuriya belted a two-run home run in the sixth, his sixth home run of the season. Diondre Jacob smacked a solo shot to left to get one back and make it 10-6. 

The Phoenix added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth, with Preston Welchel and Gaines Haussin each driving in a run for the 12-6 final score. 

Cumberland will look to win the series tomorrow as first pitch will be at 11:00 a.m. central time.
