Goldstein Fans 14 as Cumberland Rolls to Series Sweep

GEORGETOWN, Ky.--Justin Goldstein set the tone for the day tossing a complete game with 14 strikeouts in the first game. Cumberland then used a late rally and big innings in the finale to fuel the sweep of the Tigers on the road.

Cumberland (27-8-1) racked up 36 runs on the weekend in three wins to move to 7-2 in Mid-South Conference play. The University of the Cumberlands swept Bethel this weekend to stay out in front with a 9-0 conference record.

Cumberland University dominated game one on Saturday with a 10-1 win behind a stellar performance from Justin Goldstein on the mound.

Goldstein (6-2) was nearly untouchable, striking out 14 batters over seven innings while allowing just two hits and no earned runs. The Phoenix offense backed him up with a 13-hit performance, capitalizing on Georgetown's five errors.

Cumberland jumped ahead early, scoring in the first inning. The Phoenix had to build a two-out rally to push the run across as Preston Welchel singled and both Wilser Then and Dylan LaRue walked to load the bases.  Toshiki Kuriya delivered an RBI single through the right side for the first run of the game.

The Phoenix broke the game open with a four-run second, Gaines Haussin tripled to right to lead off the inning. Drew Dalton-Akiwumi followed with an RBI-double down the line. Dalton-Akiwumi came in to score on a bunt single from Hunter Moser that Tigers threw away. Welchel drove in Moser and Welchel scored on a throwing error for a 5-0 lead.

Georgetown (5-23) got on the board in the fourth when Jarrett Chapman stole third and scored on a throwing error from catcher LaRue, but that was all they could muster against Goldstein.

Cumberland tacked on one run in the fifth on a wild pitch and one more in the sixth as Welchel drove in Moser.

The Phoenix tacked on three more in the seventh as Welchel drove in Aiden McDonald on a sacrifice fly and Then hit a two-RBI single to left for the 10-1 final score.

Moser led the way offensively, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Dalton-Akiwumi, Haussin, and Then each added two hits. Welchel drove in three in the first game.

Cumberland University capped off a dominant series with a 14-5 victory over Georgetown, using a six-run sixth inning and a five-run ninth to pull away and secure the sweep in the finale.

After falling behind 4-0 in the second inning, the Phoenix chipped away at the deficit before erupting in the sixth. Trenton Duchscherer's sacrifice bunt led to two runs on an error, and Hunter Moser, Preston Welchel, and Wilser Then each drove in runs before Toshiki Kuriya capped the frame with a two-run single to give Cumberland an 8-5 lead.

Georgetown managed just one unearned run the rest of the way as Cumberland's bullpen shut the door. Grayson Cole (2-1) earned the win with three strong innings, allowing just one unearned run while striking out two. Kyle Nyblod followed with two scoreless frames to close it out. Carter Rost got the start and threw four innings giving up four hits and four runs.

The Phoenix added an insurance run in the seventh before exploding for five more in the ninth. Then singled home a run, and a balk scored a run before Kuriya and Drew Dalton-Akiwumi delivered RBI hits to seal the win.

Kuriya led the offense with four RBIs on two hits, while Moser, Dalton-Akiwumi, and Welchel each added two hits. Cumberland's patience at the plate also played a role, drawing 12 walks.

Cumberland will be on the road on Tuesday as they travel to No. 19 Johnson. Cumberland will be at home this upcoming weekend against RV Campbellsville.
