Baseball Falls to Johnson on the Road to Split Season Series

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.--Cumberland rallied late, but could not get past the 19th-ranked Johnson Royals to fall 8-6 on the road.

Logan Baskin got the start on the mound for Cumberland. Luke Wilson led off the game for the Royals with a single and then stole second and third to allow Nolan Cusey to single him home for a 1-0 lead after the first.

Johnson led off the third inning with back-to-back singles. Stolen bases put the runners on second and third Cusey came through again with a two-RBI single. Travis Hobbensiefkin followed with a double to put runners on second and third again and Braden Frank singled home a run. The Royals scored one more in the inning as former Phoenix Alonzo Zuniga drove in a run with a groundout for a 5-0 Royals lead through three.

The Phoenix got going in the fifth inning as Rafael Garcia, Trenton Duchsherer, and Gaines Haussin hit three-straight singles to start the inning with Haussin driving in Garcia for CU's first run. Drew Dalton-Akiwumi walked to load the bases with nobody out, but the Royals got a fly out from Hunter Moser and Preston Welchel lined into a double play to get the Royals out of the jam with the new score 5-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, Marcelo Saldana got two quick outs, but a single and a walk brought leadoff man Wilson back up to the plate. Wilson delivered a two-RBI triple to extend the Royals lead to 7-1.

Cumberland rallied in the seventh to score five runs and get back in the game. Garcia was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Haussin singled. Dalton-Akiwumi roped a double to score Garcia. Moser followed with an RBI-single and Welchel doubled home two. Dylan LaRue capped the inning with an RBI-single to cut the deficit to 7-6 through seven.

The Royals added a big insurance run in the eighth inning as Edwin Olmeda got on with a hit by pitch. He later stole second and then came in to score on an RBI single from Cusey.

Cumberland brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but couldn't string together hits to fall 8-6.

Gaines Haussin finished with three hits in the game as Cumberland posted 10 hits. Drew Dalton-Akiwumi went 1-for-2 with a run scored. Welchel went 1-for-5 with a double and two runs driven in. Garcis finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

The Phoenix will be back in action this weekend as they host Campbellsville in a three-game series.
