Pitching Dominates in Narrow Loss to Campbellsville

LEBANON, Tenn.--In a classic pitcher's duel that featured sharp outings from all four arms that took the mound, Cumberland came up just short in a 3-2 loss to Campbellsville Monday afternoon at Woody Hunt Stadium in the opener.

Quinlan Wiley (5-1) was handed his first loss of the season despite a strong outing, going 6.2 innings while allowing three earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Jake Green was effective in relief, tossing 2.1 hitless frames and striking out two.

Garrett Maloney (7-0) remained unbeaten on the season for Campbellsville, scattering six hits and one run over 5.2 innings before handing the ball to PJ Ledesma. He allowed just one unearned run in 3.1 innings of work allowing just one hit picking up the save.

Campbellsville (26-8, 5-1 MSC) opened the scoring in the second as Antony Gilbert roped a double to left to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Tanner Park doubled down the line to bring home Gilbert for a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers extended the lead in third as Henry Wright led off the inning with a solo blast to left field to push the lead to 2-0.

Cumberland (27-10-1, 7-3 MSC) responded in the fourth with a two out rally. Dylan LaRue singled up the middle to get it started and Toshi Kuriya and Rafael Garcia followed with singles to score one, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Wright struck again in the seventh with a two out triple and the next batter Yosuke Fujie roped a triple to add one more run and Wiley's outing.

The Phoenix threatened in the ninth as Kuriya got on with a hit by pitch. Garcie rolled over a tailor-made double play ball, but shortstop Gilbert mishandled the feed to put runners on first and second. Down to the final out, Haussin delivered a clutch single to right to score one, but the Tigers retired the next batter to get the one run win.

Kuriya led Cumberland at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored. Garcia and Haussin each had two hits and tallied an RBI, while LaRue also added a hit and scored.

Campbellsville and Cumberland will meet tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
