Softball Drops Both Opening Games of the Freed-Hardeman Series

HENDERSON, Tenn. — Cumberland Softball Drops Both Games of the Series at Freed-Hardeman.

Cumberland got off to a strong start in the top of the first inning. After a leadoff groundout by Ashley Evans, Hailey Donato singled to center field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jacey Hatfield drew a walk, and despite an infield fly from Abby Chappell, Karsyn France came through in the clutch with a two-RBI double to left field, plating Donato and Hatfield. The momentum continued as Sara Brogdon singled to left field, pushing France to third. Karley Daughrity kept the rally going with a single to right field, scoring France and giving the Phoenix an early 3-0 lead.

Freed-Hardeman struggled offensively in the early innings, managing only one hit through the first two frames. Cumberland added another run in the top of the second when Anna Lay singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Evans. Hatfield delivered an RBI single to left, extending the lead to 4-0.

The Lions responded in the bottom of the fifth, breaking through against the Cumberland pitching staff. The Lions led off with a double to right and was driven in by a double to center field. Moments later, Freed lined a double to right, scoring one and cutting the Phoenix lead to 4-2.

Freed-Hardeman capitalized on Cumberland miscues in the bottom of the sixth. A leadoff single set the stage, and an error on a sacrifice bunt allowed two runners aboard. With two outs, another fielding miscue helped the Lions plate an unearned run, trimming the deficit to one, 4-3.

Cumberland had an opportunity to extend its lead in the seventh when Lay reached base and stole second, but the Phoenix could not bring her home. That proved costly as Freed-Hardeman made their move in the bottom of the seventh. A singled to center, and a walk, putting the tying and winning runs on base. With two outs, the Lions delivered the biggest hit of the night, a two-RBI single to right field, sealing the dramatic 5-4 victory for the Lions.

Karsyn France went 1-3 with a double and recorded two RBI's. Hailey Donato went 2-4 with a run scored. Jacey Hatfield went 1-3 with a run scored and a RBI. Anna Lay went 1-3 with an RBI as well.

Despite a strong start from Cumberland, Freed-Hardeman's late-game heroics proved to be the difference-maker, as the Phoenix fell just short in a hard-fought contest.

Cumberland started strong but struggled to keep up with Freed-Hardeman's relentless offense in a 12-4 defeat. The Phoenix wasted no time getting on the board, as Ashley Evans led off the game with a single and later scored on Jacey Hatfield's RBI single to give Cumberland an early 1-0 lead. However, Freed-Hardeman responded quickly, capitalizing on a fielding error and back-to-back doubles to take a 2-1 advantage by the end of the first inning.

Cumberland fought back in the top of the second when Karley Daughrity doubled and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch, tying the game at 2-2. But Freed-Hardeman's bats came alive in the bottom half, stringing together timely hits, including a two-run single and a costly throwing error that extended the inning, allowing four runs to cross the plate and giving the Lions a 6-2 lead.

Abby Chappell provided a spark for the Phoenix in the third, launching a solo home run to left field to cut the deficit to 6-3. However, Freed-Hardeman continued its offensive surge in the bottom half, plating six more runs behind a three-run double and two RBI singles from Cumberland found themselves in a deep hole, trailing 12-3 by the end of the third inning.

The Phoenix refused to go down quietly, showing signs of life in the fifth. Hatfield and Karsyn France each singled, setting the stage for Daughrity, who drove in a run with a base hit up the middle. But with the bases loaded and a chance to close the gap, Freed-Hardeman's defense held firm, securing the final out to keep Cumberland at bay. Despite solid individual performances, the early deficit proved too much to overcome, as Cumberland dropped the contest 12-4.

The Phoenix will be back in action tomorrow for game three of this series against Freed-Hardeman at 11:00 AM.
