Phoenix Can't Extinguish Fire in Lakeland Showdown

LAKELAND, Fla. - - The Cumberland Men's Tennis Team faced off against the no. 4 ranked Southeastern Fire this afternoon and despite taking points off of them, the Fire got the best of the Phoenix.

Doubles action was controlled by the Fire as they took both the number one and number two spots from Cumberland, though the Phoenix pushed them for their third point. Both pairings of Julian Parada and Vitor Ferreria as well as Gabriel Godoy and Elisey Kalashnikov fell to the same scorelines, 6-2, but the South African duo fought hard.

Daniel Wessels and Paul-Daniel Meyer have looked good playing together and in this matchup against a top doubles team they fought to not be broken while their opponents did the same, forcing a tiebreak at 6-6. In the tiebreak the Phoenix were able to break the Fire's serve and go ahead 4-2, though the home side clawed back to win 7-6 (7-4).

Singles play was all Southeastern besides strong three-set wins from two of Cumberland's standout freshmen at five and six. Gabriel Godoy may have lost in doubles action but the MSC player of the week would not be denied in singles, winning 4-6, 6-0, 6-4.

Matching his efforts in the six spot, Hassan Ammar also lost his first set and stormed back to win his match. Going down 1-6 in the opener, the Egyptian allowed his opponent just two games in the second and broke the Fire's last serve game in the third set to avoid a tiebreak, winning 1-6, 6-2, 75-.

Spots one through four all went to Southeastern, as Vitor Ferreira fell at the top spot, 6-2, 6-2. Just after him Daniel Wessels had a marathon match that had to play out to a tiebreaker third set, falling 6-2, 6-7 (7-4), 6-10.

Possibly with some wear and tear on them after a long weekend of matches, Julian Parada and Paul-Daniel Meyer both fell at the following two spots. Meyer dropped number three, 6-0, 6-4, while Parada fell 6-2, 6-1, on court four.

Cumberland will play next Tuesday, a week from today, heading to Clarksville to take on NCAA DI rivals, Austin Peay.
