No. 7 Ranked Fire Stifle Phoenix Upset Hopes in Florida

LAKELAND, Fla. - - The Cumberland Women's Tennis Team kept their road stand going with a dual against the no. 7 ranked Southeastern Fire.

Starting with doubles play like always, the Fire ran out to a lead and that momentum looked as though it could carry them the rest of the match. Emilia Nowak and Juanita Mendez took on the number one spot and couldn't find a game, falling 6-0, the same score that Madeleine Darud and Valentina Mendez found.

Kaede Hatano and Lara Zugasti had the most success on court two, losing 6-3, though Southeastern already had their point in hand. Singles action kept up the trend of the Fire burning their way through the Phoenix lineup, though Cumberland did not go down without a fight.

Elina Sungatullina lost at the poll position, 6-3, 6-2, as well as Ame Van Eijk who dropped on court two, 6-0, 6-1, but Emilia Nowak did find her groove on court three. The freshman stormed away with the first set, 6-1, but the Fire number three fought her way back to win the second set, 6-3, as well as the third set tiebreak, 10-4.

Valentina Mendez and Lara Zugasti were both taken down by the same scoreline, but reversed, on courts four and five, falling 6-2, 6-0, and 6-0, 6-2, respectively. The last member of the Phoenix to play was another freshman, Asya Tilsim Timur, who like Nowak won her first set, but was victim to a Southeastern comeback.

Timur came out of the gates strong winning 6-4 in her opening set, before then falling 2-6 in the second and 5-10 in the third set tiebreak for the match.

Cumberland will have a week off to rest up during spring break before taking on strong competition in NCAA DI rivals, Austin Peay, next Tuesday in Clarksville.
