Kenyon Strikes Out 10 as CU Run Rules Michigan-Dearborn

LEBANON, Tenn.--JP Kenyon dazzled in four innings of work as the Phoenix run rule Michigan-Dearborn 10-0 on Thursday afternoon at Ernest L. Stockton Field - Woody Hunt Stadium.

The Phoenix broke the game open with an explosive sixth inning, scoring seven runs to seal the win.

Cumberland (16-4-1) struggled to find offense early but broke the game open with an eight run sixth inning. Cumberland capitalized on nine walks and three hit batters to go along with seven hits to push across 10 runs.

The Phoenix took the lead in the fifth after outting runners on second and third. Wilser Then hit a fly ball to left that appeared to have fallen for a base hit. The left fielder made a diving grab that scored one on a sacrifice fly, but Dearborn through it way trying to throw behind the runners to allow a second run to score.

The Phoenix pulled away in the sixth, starting with Aiden McDonald driving in a run on a fielder's choice. Drew Dalton-Akiwumi followed with an RBI double down the line, and Preston Welchel drew a bases-loaded walk to extend the lead to 5-0. Then added a two-run single, and Dylan LaRue doubled in another to make it 8-0. Two more runs came in when pinch-hitter Chris Martin and Cohl Proctor were hit by pitches with the bases loaded, capping the eight-run frame.

CU finished with seven hits, including doubles from Dalton-Akiwumi, Then, LaRue, and Toshiki Kuriya. Then led the offense with two hits and three RBIs, while Dalton-Akiwumi, LaRue, and McDonald each added an RBI.

On the mound, JP Kenyon set the tone with a dominant start, striking out 10 batters over four scoreless innings while allowing just two hits. Jake Green (2-0) earned the win in relief, striking out all three batters he faced in the fifth. Hunter Brown followed with a hitless sixth inning, adding a strikeout, while Tanner Batts closed out the game, allowing just one hit in the seventh to secure the shutout. The Phoenix pitching staff combined for 14 strikeouts while holding the Wolverines to just three hits.

Cumberland will be at home this Saturday and Sunday to take on Lourdes in a three-game series.
