Dinh, Guzman Advance in Championship Bracket, Six Phoenix left after Day One of NAIA National Championship

PARK CITY, Kan.--Jared Dinh and Victor Guzman move forward to day two in the championship bracket while six Phoenix remain after day one of the NAIA National Championship. The Phoenix sit in 12th place in the team standings heading into day two. 

Jared Dinh continued to move his way through the 141-pound bracket. After his win earlier today, Dinh squared off with the No. 10 seed Conner Kimbrough from Indiana Tech . Dinh picked up seven points quickly in the first round to set the tone and cruise to an 11-1 major decision to move on. Dinh will now face the No. 2 seed Hartwell Taylor from Saint Mary. Taylor has won two close matches defeating Luke Jensen from Corban 2-1 and Drew Jones from Southeastern 4-2.

Guzman moved to the championship quarterfinals in the 149 pound weight class. Guzman beat 12-seed Kristofer Arrey from Missouri Valley in dominant fashion. Guzman got up 6-1 after the first using two takedowns. He had a huge second period using three takedowns to put Arrey on the verge of a tech fall. He picked up the reversal in the third period to push it over the top to earn the 18-2 tech fall and move on. He will face 13-seed Mario De La Torre from Southeastern in the quarterfinals tomorrow morning. De La Torre had a first round bye and beat Tyler Diaz from Simpson to advance. 

Eli Clemmons had his third match with Turner Black from the Cumberlands in the second round of the championship bracket. Black bested Clemmons with a narrow 4-2 decision to send Clemmons to the consolation bracket. Clemmons drew Black's teammate in the consolation and 13-seed Weston Melvin. Clemmons caught Melvin in the first round for a pinfall to advance. He will wrestle the third-straight Mid-South opponent in 14-seed Jasitin Kubwimmana from Campbellsville. Clemmons beat Kubiwmmana in the Mid-South Conference tournament with a 11-3 major decision. 

Ethan Gomez also wrestled in the 165 consolation bracket. Gomez advanced after 10-seed Bridger Hall from Providence medically forfeited. He is set to face 15-seed Angel Hernandez from Keiser. 

Cameron Nesbitt stayed alive in the 174-pound consolations. Nesbitt advanced with a win over Benedict Holthaus from Friends. Nesbitt took an ealy lead in the first with a takedown and grabbed three more points in the second. He picked up two points from a reversal for an 8-3 decision. He will wrestle the No. 5 seed Alex Couto from Life in the morning session. 

Tyler Rowland survived in the 197-pound bracket with a 12-8 decision over 9-seed Burton Brandt from Midland. Rowland trailed after the first period, but got it going in the second with a takedown and four-point near fall. He added an escape and a takedown in the third to take control of the match before giving up points toward the end to move on. He will face John Lovett from Reinhardt tomorrow morning. 

Rocco Horvath saw his championship come to an end as he lost to 10-seed and Mid-South foe Tom Ketchen-Carter from the Cumberlands.  Ketchen-Carter used two takedowns in the first and one late in the third to get the win. 

After day one, the Phoenix are in 12th place with 19.5 points. Defending national champion Grand View is in the lead with 51 points. Southeastern is in second with 37.0 followed closely by Life with 34.5 and Providence in fourth with 33.0.

Session III will begin tomorrow morning with the third round of the championship bracket as well as the third round of the consolation bracket. The night session will be the championship semifinals followed by the blood rounds in the consolation bracket and then the consolation quarterfinals.
