Phoenix Drop Second Five Set Thriller in Three Days

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. - - The Cumberland Men's Volleyball Team faced off with the Oakland City Mighty Oaks, returning back to conference action in the Hoosier state.

Just two days after their last match, a five set thriller against no. 4 Missouri Baptist, the Phoenix had to run the gauntlet again in their matchup against the upstart Oakland City Mighty Oaks.

Cumberland started the match off on the wrong foot as the Mighty Oaks doubled Cumberland's score early on at 6-3, though the Phoenix still had time to respond. Getting the first set all the way to 20-20, the home side responded with a sharp run to take the opener.

Winning four points in a row, Oakland City had a set point which they served into the net, though they won the following point, 25-21. The second set played out much like the first did as both teams fought and clawed their way to a 25-25 set with neither team winning more than two points in a row for nearly a 30 point stretch.

Despite falling in the first set when things got close, Cumberland made certain it did not happen again with a service ace and kill both coming from Jacob Whyte to seal the set 27-25. Using that momentum it was all Phoenix to start the third set, going out to a 9-4 lead before the Mighty Oaks could begin to find their footing.

Showing their fight however, the Mighty Oaks did just that, scoring in bunches to flip their deficit into a 16-16 tie game which was flipped all the way around by the end of the third. Oakland City won nine of the next ten points en route to a 25-17 win, meaning the Phoenix needed a fourth set win to give themselves a chance.

Just like the Oaks did in the previous set, Cumberland responded whenever they needed to, saving three set and match points as the set turned into a marathon. With the match near its conclusion at 29-30 in favor of Oakland City it was Jacob Whyte playing the hero for Cumberland, smashing three kills to will the Phoenix to a fifth set.

The fifth and final set just kept up the same trend that the match had all along, with neither team really able to pull away from each other until the death of it. Getting all the way down to 10-10 it looked like it could be anyone's match, but the home side responded better.

Winning back-to-back points to take a 12-10 lead, Oakland City were only stifled momentarily by a Jacob Whyte kill, then going on to win the next three points in a row to win 15-11.

Despite the loss Cumberland had some amazing performances on the night with Jacob Whyte being one kill shy of the match lead as he gathered 22. Sam Mannebach was just one assist shy of the half century mark, scoring 49.

Cumberland will play another River States bout again tomorrow afternoon at 1 PM, taking on Brescia
