Men's Volleyball Defeats Brescia University in Four Sets in Owensboro

OWENSBORO, Ky. - - Men's Volleyball Defeats Brescia University in Four Sets in Owensboro

The Phoenix started set one down by a point at 2-1, but went on a 5-0 run which was led by Joao Infante with a big time kill to give the Phoenix some momentum. The Phoenix continued to score but Brescia would not go away and continued to hang around. Brescia went on a 4-0 run to bring the score within one at 20-19 with the Phoenix still in the lead. Brescia ended up going on a 3-0 run to take their first lead of the first set at 24-22. The Phoenix would not give up and ended the first set on a 3-0 run with kills from Chance Gallardo, Jacob Whyte, and Infante to secure the first set victory 28-26. 

Set two started back and forth until Brescia went on a 3-0 run to extend their lead to 7-3. The Phoenix answered back with a 4-0 run for themselves and tied it at 7-7. They went back and forth again with no runs until the Phoenix went on another run to jump ahead by a length of 16-11. The Phoenix kept piling on points and extending their lead until they ran away with set two by a score of 25-17.

Cumberland looked in set three for the clean sweep but Brescia got hot and went on many small runs after staying back and forth until they went on a 5-0 run and extended their lead by six points at 18-12. The Phoenix went on a small run that was sparked by Infante but the Bearcats continued to pour on kills to stay in the lead. The Phoenix pulled within two points at 23-21 but Brescia finished out set three with the victory with a score of 25-21. 

The fourth set the Phoenix led 2-1 in sets and needed to win only one more set to take the match victory. After being tied 2-2, CU went on a 4-0 run to give some room for some momentum. Brescia tried staying with Cumberland, but the Phoenix continued to go on runs and led by as much as five points. The Phoenix ended set four and the final set on a 4-0 run which was led by Infante and Frederick Amegbletor ended it with a kill to win 25-21. 

Joao Infante led the Phoenix in kills with 17 and Jacob Whyte followed up Infante with 15 kills. Infante always recorded three service aces. Sam Mannebach led in aces with four and also recorded 34 assists on the day. 

Defensively, Amegbletor led the Phoenix with four total blocks and Alexander Heuer recorded 17 digs in the victory. 

The Phoenix will be back in action March 11th at Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena at 7:00 PM to take on the Tigers of Georgetown.
