Guzman One Win Away From Title Bout, Phoenix Keep Four in Contention at Nationals

PARK CITY, Kan.--Victor Guzman advances to the semifinals with a win while the Phoenix keep four in the hunt for All-American status after session III of the NAIA National Championships. 

Guzman continues to shine at the NAIA National Championships advancing through the 149-pound quarterfinals with a win over 13-seed Mario De La Torre from Southeastern. De La Torre took an early lead in the first, but Guzman capitalized with five points in the second with a two-point nearfall and a takedown. He got a quick escape in the third followed by a takedown to get a 10-5 decision to advance. 

Guzman is set to face the 8-seed Elijah Larsen from Grand View tonight in the semifinals with the winner advancing to the 149-pound championship bout. Larsen upset No. 1 Nik Yancey from Campbellsville and has been impressive in his tournament run. Guzman is the highest-seed left in the championship bracket semifinals as on the other side is 11-seed Hagen Heistand from Concordia and 10-seed Alex Pena from Wayland Baptist. 

Guzman has also locked up All-American honors with the win. 

Jared Dinh was the other Phoenix that started the day in the championship bracket. Dinh battled it out with 2-seed in the 141-bracket, Hartwell Taylor from Saint Mary. Taylor ended up with a 5-1 decision to send Dinh to the consolation bracket.  Dinh will face a familiar opponent in 13-seed Adrian Ayala from Lindsey Wilson in the blood round tonight. Dinh beat Ayala in the Mid-South Conference Championship match with a 4-0 decision. Ayala wrestled up in our dual and faced Guzman at 149. 

Eli Clemmons opened day two with a win over 14-seed Jasitin Kubwimmana from Campbellsville. Clemmons got down early, but used a big third period with a reversal and two takedowns to get a 9-6 decision to move on to the blood round. Clemmons will face 9-seed Reese Jones from Life for a chance to be an NAIA All-American. 

Tyler Rowland was the last Phoenix on the mat in session III. Rowland faced John Lovett from Reinhardt. The match was tied at 2-2 in the third when Rowland had a takedown with four seconds left to stay alive and advance. He will face 11-seed Gentry Smith from Southeastern in the All-American round tonight. 

Ethan Gomez and Cameron Nesbitt each had their tournament run come to an end at 1-2. Gomez, wrestling in the 165 consolation bracket, was beaten by 15-seed Angel Hernandez from Keiser with an 11-1 major decision.  Nesbitt lost to the 5-seed Alex Couto from Life via a 5-2 decision. 

After session III, the Phoenixstay in 12th place with 27.5 points. Grand View still holds on to the lead with 109.0 points. Life has moved into second place with 75.5 points followed by Southeastern with 62.5 points. Providence is in fourth and Doane is in fifth place. 

Session IV will begin tonight at 6:00 p.m. with the fourth round of the championship bracket as well as the third round of the consolation bracket. The night session will be the championship semifinals followed by the blood rounds in the consolation bracket and then the fifth round of the consolation bracket.
