Moore Pitches Eleven Innings of Two-Run Softball as Phoenix Split DH with No. 8 Grizzlies

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - - After being swept by the Grizzlies earlier this season the Phoenix went to their home turf and battled their way to a split of this afternoon's doubleheader.

Game one was not so kind to the Phoenix as GGC's pitching was on point from the start. Jacey Hatfield was the only baserunner for Cumberland as the Phoenix went hitless through four innings while the Grizzly attack was flowing through the opening two.

Gwinnett recorded two runs to start off their strong first game before then adding in four more in the bottom of the second. Despite the hot start for GGC, both teams settled into the game and there wasn't another run scored for the rest of the game by either team.

Much of the credit for slowing the Grizzlies down can be given to Annalee Moore who came in and settled into the game with four scoreless innings, leading way for a start in the second game of the day. Head Coach Stephanie Theall saw something in the senior in her game one performance and threw her back out there after the first game loss and the senior did not disappoint.

Getting early run support from Jacey Hatfield in the first inning, Moore was dominant in the circle. The Grizzlies managed a runner on base each of the first three innings but the Phoenix defense was on point, allowing for Sara Brogdon to slap a single up the middle and push across Hatfield in the top of the third, 2-0 Cumberland.

GGC did look like they might put on their rally caps with a one-out double in the bottom of the fourth, but Moore again came up big with a strikeout to escape the inning unscathed. Finally breaking through again, the sixth inning was fruitful for both teams bats with a combined three runs coming across the plate in the inning.

Karley Daughrity slapped a single to lead off the inning and Anna Lay slapped a hit down the left field line to put two runners on with just one out. A sacrifice bunt from Ashley Evans put both of the runners in scoring position and Hailey Donato barreled up a single to center field to score the pair, making it 4-0 for CU after the top of the sixth.

Gwinnett did get their first run of the game as well, but Moore was able to get herself out of a jam with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning and just the one run to show for it, now 4-1 Phoenix.

Cumberland could not find any more run support in the top of the seventh, putting it all down to the senior in the circle to finish the game off. The leadoff batter for GGC reached base and stole second, then was pushed over by a sharply hit single to third base.

With runners on first and third with no outs, the Grizzlies attempted a double steal and despite pushing across the run at home, Abby Chappell pulled down an excellent throw to take the runner at second down, now eliminating the tying run. Shifting all of the momentum onto the Phoenix's side, both Jacey Hatfield and Karsyn France made excellent defensive plays to get out of the inning and take game two, 4-2.

Cumberland will be back at home this weekend, taking on Campbellsville on Friday as they get back to conference action.
