Phoenix Open Up Postseason Play With RSC Quarterfinals Victory over Brescia

LEBANON, Tenn. - - Cumberland men's volleyball kicked off postseason play with a River States Conference Quarterfinals win over Brescia University.

The Phoenix opened up the quarters with a 13-9 lead in the first set, keeping the Bearcats at an arm's length for most of the frame. Brescia set their block up well but struggled to contain Joao Infante, Jacob Whyte, and Chance Gallardo who all grabbed a handful of kills in the set.

Bringing it as close as 21-19, Brescia tried to make a comeback but the Phoenix were not to be denied in the set, winning 25-21.

The six-seed in the tournament found themselves down again in the second set, but at 11-11 Brescia fought back to grab their first strong lead of the match. Winning six of the next seven points, the Bearcats had their biggest lead of the evening at 17-12.

Cumberland did not let that deficit scare them however, fighting back to make it 19-17, forcing a Brescia timeout. Coming out of the timeout the Phoenix added another point in to make it 19-18 and by crunchtime, Cumberland had gotten into their groove.

Joao Infante and Jacob Whyte combined for three kills in the closing moments of the set to see the three-seed take the second, 25-22.

After back-and-forth one and two point rallies in the first two sets, the third flipped the game on its head. Cumberland first went on a three point run to take the lead 5-3, but the Bearcats followed that up with a four point run of their own to go back ahead, 8-5.

Yet another pair of three point runs occurred for each team directly after that point, though the Bearcats kept finding a way to pull back out ahead when they needed to. Cumberland led as late as 17-16, though Brescia went on another two big tears to pull out a third set victory, 25-21.

Needing one more set to grab the quarterfinals victory, Cumberland sped out to a 12-6 lead and the Bearcats could never find their way back into the match. Brescia made one real attempt at a comeback, getting back down to just a two point deficit at 15-13, but three straight kills from Joao Infante set the crowd on fire as the Phoenix ran their lead right back out.

Cementing the Phoenix's trip to the semifinals, who else but Infante would slam home a kill to take the fourth and final set, 25-18. The Portuguese star led the match with 24 kills and was nine kills removed from his closest competitor, also adding in 10 digs.

Cumberland will now head to Georgetown on Friday for their next matchup, taking on the two seed, Campbellsville, in the semis.
