Softball Sweeps the Tigers in Conference Doubleheader

LEBANON, Tenn. - - Cumberland softball played in their final home doubleheader of the year and took on the Georgetown Tigers, winning both games this afternoon.

In game one Madison Croxford tossed a complete-game four-hitter, and the Phoenix delivered timely offense to take down Georgetown 3-1 in the first game of Friday's home doubleheader at Billy Dee Ross Stadium. Croxford was sharp throughout, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out eight. She walked three but stranded six Tiger runners, improving to 8-8 on the year with the win.

Cumberland got on the board in the first when Ashley Evans tripled to left and scored on a two-out RBI single by Abby Chappell. After Georgetown tied the game in the third, the Phoenix responded immediately. Anna Lay singled and stole second before scoring on a squeeze bunt by Jacey Hatfield, giving Cumberland a 2-1 lead.

In the fourth, Karley Daughrity doubled down the left field line, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on an infield single from Brylee Bartley to push the lead to 3-1.

Evans led the offense from the two-hole, going a perfect 3-for-3 with a triple and a run scored. Bartley added two hits and an RBI, while Lay, Hatfield, Chappell, and Daughrity each chipped in a hit.

Keeping their momentum from game one, Cumberland exploded for five runs in the sixth inning and got key production throughout the lineup to complete the sweep of Georgetown with a 9-3 win in game two of the DH.

Carley Clinard earned her first win of the season in relief, and Madison Croxford came back to close the door with a four-out save—her second of the year. The Phoenix combined for 10 hits and took full advantage of four Tiger errors to break open a tight game late.

Anna Lay set the tone from the leadoff spot, reaching base three times, stealing two bases, and scoring three runs. She singled and scored in the first and second innings, helping Cumberland to an early 2-0 lead.

After Georgetown tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth, the Phoenix responded. Lay walked and later scored on an RBI single by Abby Chappell. Karsyn France followed with a sacrifice fly to score Jacey Hatfield, giving Cumberland a 4-2 lead.

In the sixth, the Phoenix blew it open. After a single by Brylee Bartley and a walk from Lay, Ashley Evans delivered a two-run single and came all the way around to score on a pair of throwing errors. Hatfield, who finished with two runs and an RBI, added a single, and Chappell drew a walk before France capped the rally with an RBI single to center.

Evans went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Chappell added a hit, two RBIs, a walk, and a stolen base. France finished with two RBIs, and Bartley went 2-for-3. Cumberland stole six bases in the win, including swipes from Lay, Evans, Hatfield, and Chappell.

Madison Lancaster started in the circle and allowed two runs over 4.2 innings. Clinard pitched an inning and a third before Croxford slammed the door in the seventh with a 1-2-3 frame.

The Phoenix will finish the series out tomorrow afternoon, along with celebrating their Senior Day festivities.
