BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Cumberland Women's Tennis picked up a 4-0 sweep over Freed-Hardeman Wednesday afternoon in the Mid-South Conference Quarterfinals, marking the Phoenix's second win over the Lions in five days.
Cumberland claimed the doubles point with dominant wins on courts two and three.
Lara Zugasti and
Kaede Hatano cruised to a 6-0 win on court two, while
Valentina Mendez and
Madeleine Darud rolled 6-1 on court three. The top doubles match featuring
Emilia Nowak and
Juanita Mendez was left unfinished with Cumberland trailing 1-2 when the match was clinched.
In singles, Elina Sungatullina set the tone with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 win on court one. Lara Zugasti followed with an equally dominant 6-1, 6-0 result at the six spot, and Ame Van Eijk provided the clinching win on court five with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
The remaining matches on courts two, three, and four were unfinished as the Phoenix took a 4-0 lead. Asya Tilsim Timur trailed 6-3, 0-3 on court two but was looking to bounce back. Valentina Mendez had won her first set 6-2 and was up 5-0 in the second. Kaede Hatano was in control on court four, up 6-3, 3-2 when play was halted.
Cumberland now advances to face second-seeded University of the Cumberlands in the MSC Semifinals Thursday at noon.
