Kuriya's Walk-Off Blast Lifts Phoenix to Game One Win Over No. 7 Cumberlands

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland baseball delivered one of its most thrilling victories of the season in game one before falling just short in a hard-fought pitchers' duel in game two, splitting a doubleheader with No. 7 Cumberlands on Thursday at Woody Hunt Stadium.

In one of the wildest finishes of the season, Cumberland baseball staged a miraculous seven-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, capped off by Takuya Kuriya's walk-off three-run home run, to shock No. 7 Cumberlands 10-9 in the opener.

Down 9-3 heading into their final at-bat, the Phoenix sent seven batters to the plate and racked up four hits and three free bases in the inning. After a hit-by-pitch and walk opened the frame, Dalton-Akiwumi sliced an RBI double down the right field line to spark the comeback. RBI singles from Preston Welchel and Wilser Then cut the deficit to 9-7 before Kuriya stepped to the plate with two on and launched a no-doubt shot over the left field scoreboard to walk it off.

Kuriya finished 1-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Trenton Duchsherer also homered and drove in two. Hunter Moser and Welchel each recorded multi-hit days in the upset win.

Cumberland starter Quinlan Wiley gave the Phoenix a strong chance, tossing six innings and striking out six, but it was reliever Jake Green (5-1) who earned the win despite giving up four runs in the top half of the seventh.

Cumberlands looked to have the game in hand after a seven-hit, four-run top of the seventh gave them a 9-3 lead. The Patriots tallied 16 hits in the game and got home runs from Carlos Muniz, Pedro Vasquez, and Chase Petrey, who combined for six RBIs

The Patriots scored in the first on an RBI fielders choice from Max Harper after a single and a stolen base from Christian Thompson to leadoff the game. The Phoenix answered in the bottom half as Moser singled and then stole second before an errant throw sent him to third. He came in to score on a passed ball to tie the game.

The Cumberlands scored a pair of runs in the third as Pedro Vasquez hit a line drive home run to left center and add one more in the fourth on a solo shot from Caden Petrey.

Cumberland struck back with two runs in the bottom hal to make it 4-3 as Duchsherer blasted a two run shot to center.

Charlie Muniz led off the fifth inning with a solo home run before the chaos unveiled in the combined 11-run seventh inning.

Game two was a pitcher's duel from start to finish as the Patriots outlasted the Phoenix in a 1-0 win.

Patriots starter Kailen Hamson was fantastic on the mound in game two. Hamson gave up a lead off single to Dalton-Akiwumi to start the game and then did not allow another runner to reach base going seven innings and striking out nine.

Justin Goldstein was tagged with the loss, throwing six innings and giving up four hits and one unearned run. Grayson Cole threw a scoreless seventh inning and Kyle Nyblod threw the final two frames without giving up a run.

The lone run came in the fourth inning for the Patriots. Vasquez legged out an infield single and moved up to second on a throwing error. A single moved him to third before he came in on a Trent Prokes groundout which proved to be the winning run.

The Phoenix and Patriots will meet for game three. A gametime has not been decided right now, but the game is expected to be played either tomorrow or Saturday.
