Phoenix Cap Senior Day with Shut out and Series Win over No. 7 Patriots

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland baseball delivered a dominant performance on Senior Day, shutting out No. 7-ranked Cumberlands (Ky.) 4-0 at Woody Hunt Stadium to claim the series victory.

The win pushes the Phoenix to 33-15-1 on the season finishing with a 13-5 mark in Mid-South Conference play to finish as the two-seed. The University of the Cumberlands fall to 41-8 and 16-2 in conference.

Prior to the game, the Phoenix honored 22 seniors that played their final home game at Ernest L. Stockton Field - Woody Hunt Stadium on Saturday.

Senior starter Carter Rost was sensational on the mound for the Phoenix, tossing five no-hit innings while striking out seven to improve to 7-0 on the year. Grayson Cole and Kyle Nyblod closed the door over the final four innings, with Nyblod earning his fourth save of the season. Nyblod and Cole just gave up three hits in the final four frames to shut down the win.

The Phoenix offense struck early scoring one in the second. Toshiki Kuriya led off the inning with a single to left and stole second before coming in to score on Trenton Duchsherer's RBI single.

Cumberland manufactured on more in the fourth as Dylan LaRue roped a double to lead off the inning. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Dchsherer before Javy Beal added an RBI groundout to extend the lead to 2-0.

Cumberland then took advantage of Cumberlands' defensive miscues in the seventh, scoring twice. Beal drew a lead off walk and Drew Dalton-Akiwumi reached on an error on a sac bunt. Hunter Moser followed with a bunt for a base hit and a throwing error allowed a run to come in. Preston Welchel hit a sacrifice fly to score Dalton-Akiwumi.

Cumberland out-hit the Patriots 9-3, led by two hits from Moser. Meanwhile, the Phoenix defense turned two double plays and stranded five Cumberlands runners to preserve the shutout.

The Phoenix will look to carry this momentum into the conference tournament set to begin on Tuesday with the play-in game. Cumberland will be the 2-seed and will play the 5-seed, yet to be determined, on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
