Phoenix Cage the Bearcats in Dominant Three Set Performance

LEBANON, Tenn. - - Cumberland Men's Volleyball swept conference foes Brescia 3-0 this afternoon, taking the series sweep over the Bearcats.

The Bearcats started off strong, going out to a 7-3 lead, as the Phoenix's typically impressive block couldn't fight off the Brescia attack early on. Cumberland did begin to fight back, winning four of the next five points to make it 8-7 for Brescia.

Battling back and forth, the first set was all Brescia early on but the Phoenix did fight their way to a lead after going down 13-9. Cumberland went on a run that spanned eight points, profiting off strong serving by Abdallah Roshdy which forced a timeout at 17-13, in favor of the Phoenix.

Making good use of the timeout, the Bearcats won the next point but the Phoenix were not to be denied. Running away with the set, another four point run secured the set for Cumberland, winning the opener 25-17.

Brescia again went running in the second set, starting off hot with a 4-1 lead. Returning with a three point run of their own, a Jacob Whyte kill made it 4-4 for the Phoenix. From that point on it was all Cumberland as they streaked out ahead with an eight point run, leading 13-5.

That lead was more than enough to take the second set, 25-14, seeing Cumberland nearly double the Bearcats kill total while hitting at a 50% clip.

Unlike the first two sets, this time around it was the Phoenix going ahead early, 6-3, while the Bearcats had to battle their first slow start of the match. Fighting their way out of it sooner rather than later, they clawed their way to a lead, though it was short lived.

Making another huge run like they did in the second set, Cumberland pulled out to a comfortable lead as they sprinted out 17-11, winning six points in a row. The whole Phoenix attack was fruitful, but special plaudit had to be given to the Phoenix net players, allowing Brescia just 11% hitting from the net, totaling 12 blocks to go with it.

Jacob Whyte had his second big night in a row with 19 kills, hitting an impressive 66% of his attacks. Francesco Corradini was also impressive in the block as the Italian totaled 9 blocks and 8 kills.

Cumberland will play their final home game of the season this coming Tuesday, taking on Reinhardt at 6 PM.
