Softball Bats Explode in Tournament Opening Win over Lindsey Wilson

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.--Cumberland Softball exploded for a season-high 14 runs and held off a big comeback effort from Lindsey Wilson to advance in the winner's bracket with a 14-9 win. The Phoenix will take on top-seeded Cumberlands later today.

Ashley Evans went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Jacey Hatfield finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Karsyn France added a 2-for-5 performance with a home run, double and two RBIs, and Azaria Jones homered as part of a 2-for-5 day with three runs scored and one RBI. Abby Chappell drove in two runs and doubled, and Sara Brogdon tallied three hits, an RBI and a stolen base. 

Cumberland capitalized on a pair of walks to score a run in the top of the first. Lay walked to lead off the game and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. She swiped third base before scoring on an RBI-single from Karley Daughrity. 

Cumberland opened the game up with a four run second inning to take control early. Brogdon led off the inning with a single before Azaria Jones walked. Hailey Donato dropped down a sacrifice bunt, but the Phoenix rallied with two outs. Ashley Evans laced a single at the third baseman to score one. Jacey Hatfield followed with an RBI m-single up the middle and Abby Chappell doubled off the wall to score two more for a 5-0 lead through two. 

Karsyn France led off the third with her first home run of the season, a shot to left field and the Phoenix continued to pour it on.  Evans singled in a run, Hatfield pushed across two more with a single to center, and Daughrity drove in one with her second single of the game. France roped a double, her second extra base hit of the inning, to score one more. Brogdon capped it with a singling home Daughrity for a 13-0 lead through three innings. 

The Blue Raiders battled back in the fifth inning to stave off the run rule win for CU. Lindsey Wilson scored seven runs and chased starter Madison Croxford. The big blow in the inning came from a three-run homer from Sam Hartman. 

Azaria Jones got one back for CU in the top of the sixth as she belted a solo home run to left, also her first of the season. 

The Blue Raiders continued to fight in the sixth inning tacking on two more before the Phoenix finally finished the game off for the 14-9 final.

Madison Croxford picked the win in the circle to move to 9-10 on the season. She tossed 6.1 innings and allowed six earned runs with three strikeouts. Madison Lancaster came in and recorded two outs in the big seven run inning for the Blue Raiders.

The Phoenix will advance to take on top-seed University of the Cumberlands this afternoon scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
