Softball Falls to Elimination Bracket after 12-1 Loss to Patriots

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.--Fifth-seeded Cumberland fell into the elimination bracket Thursday evening after a 12-1 loss in five innings to top-seeded Cumberlands in the second round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament at Cathi Maynard Park.

The Patriots (36-7) struck early with five runs in the first inning off six hits and an error, highlighted by a three-run double from Jules Johnson and an RBI single from Jade Gainer. Cumberland (16-27) answered with a run in the top of the second as Abby Chappell singled and later came around to score on Azaria Jones' sacrifice fly, but Cumberlands continued to pour it on.

The Patriots added three more runs in the second, taking advantage of a walk, two singles and a fielder's choice. Maliyah Wilkins crushed a two-run homer to left in the third, pushing the lead to 10-1, and Amber Gainer followed with a two-run home run of her own in the fourth to cap the scoring.

Chappell finished 1-for-1 with a walk and a run scored to lead Cumberland offensively, while Karsyn France, Anna Lay, and Hailey Donato each added singles. Jones tallied the lone RBI.

Madison Lancaster (5-9) took the loss for CU, allowing five runs on five hits in a third of an inning. 

Lindsey Shope (20-3) earned the win for Cumberlands, holding the Phoenix to four hits and one run over five innings.

Cumberland will face No. 6-seed Bethel in an elimination game Friday morning at 9:30 a.m.
