Softball Walks Off Bethel to Keep Season Alive

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn--Cumberland softball exploded for six runs in the first inning, but the Wildcats fought back to tie the game. Cumberland capped off the game with a walk-off walk in the bottom of the seventh to edge Bethel, 7-6, and keep their season alive Friday morning at Cathi Maynard Park.

The Phoenix (17-27) stormed out of the gates with a six-run first inning, collecting six hits and taking advantage of a pair of Wildcat errors. Anna Lay sparked the frame with a leadoff double and later added an RBI bunt single in the same inning. Sara Brogdon and Abby Chappell also drove in runs, while Brylee Bartley and Hailey Donato each added RBI singles as Cumberland batted around.

Bethel (18-22) chipped away at the deficit with four runs in the third, aided by two Phoenix errors. The Wildcats added two more in the fifth to tie the game at 6-6, with Amme Benson's RBI double evening the score.

Madison Lancaster came on in relief in the fifth and was dominant, tossing 2.1 innings of hitless, scoreless softball to pick up the win and move to 6-8 on the season.

In the bottom of the seventh, Jacey Hatfield reached on an error, and Cumberland loaded the bases with one out. Brogdon then drew the game-winning walk to bring home Hatfield and seal the victory.

Lay led the Phoenix with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, while Chappell reached base three times and scored once. Cumberland will now face the winner of Lindsey Wilson and Campbellsville later tonight in another elimination game.
